i have just received a Schrade+/U.S.A. LTD rope knife(?) with etch of 2 sailing ships ans a banner with "The Flying Cloud"; wood handles, round shield with "Muesum of the City of New York", serial 0249 on bolster. it does not say "Currier & Ives".
i've tried "search" and looking through the catalogues but find no references to this knife.
can someone direct me to info already posted, or, fill me in on the details of this issue ?
thanks, roland

G'Day Roland,On page 9 of 18 of my corner Larry H Downunder on Schrades R Us right hand bottom corner you will see 2 photos of this knife I have hanging in my Den.The plaque reads Currier& Ives Limited Edition: "The Flying Cloud" Sailing the Seas from the beautiful 1852 lithography depicting the way America travelled the World.: Second in a Series by Schrade Cutlery. There should be an anchor on the bolster where you have the serial Number? The First in the series also depicted in that photo is the "Lightening Express Leaving the Junction". Tim has recently been discussing the Aurum Etching on blades. Trust this helps. Hoo Roo

P.S. Mine is Serial#0237. I believe produced in 1984 by Sears.

thanks Larry, i'll post a pic. today if rain quits.
i knew this knife was in your collection, but really need an index, as you have SOOOO many fine knives posted(and thank you greatly for all the time and effort).
so are these 2 the only Currier & Ives ? and only released in '84 ?
was there any connection between Sears and C.& I. ?
is this Flying Cloud rope knife a copy of an old Cut. Co. pattern ?
is the wood walnut ?
and..... why the museum of NYC shield ? ('cause that's where the original C.&I. art work is ?)
lotta questions eh ? sometimes i feel like the forever newbie in the vast Schrade maze.

Here is what I know.
In Oct 83 Imperial Schrade paid a license fee to the Museum Of The City Of New York in which they paid a $1000.00 fee to acquire up to 25 prints of the Currier & Ives art work per print. A 5% royality on each knife sold was paid to the museum. This royality was based upon the factory selling price not the retail selling price. As Larry stated, Starting in 1984 with the Express and in 85 with the Flying Cloud. Imperial was on a 5 year plan to make a new knife each year but I can find no other prints after the 2nd year. Sears contracted with Imperial to sell the knives in their Christmas year books for both years. Camillus was contracted in 1985 to make 1200 of the blades. The agreement gave Imperial the exclusive license to reproduce Currier & Ives on all cutlery (sportsmen's and household) until June 30, 1986.

Here is a list of the prints they were considering
a, The Danger Signal
b, Clipper Ship "Flying Cloud"
c, Washington Crossing The Delaware
d. Clipper Ship "Comet" of New York
e. The Iron Steam Ship "Great Eastern" 22,500 tons
f. Clipper Ship "Great Republic".
g. The Bark "Theoxena"
h. Steam Ship "Oceanic"
i. "Rounding A Bend" On The Mississippi/The Parting Salute
j. The Champions Of The Mississippi/"A Race For The Buckhorns"
k. "Wooding Up" On The Mississippi
l. A Midnight Race On The Mississippi
m. Gold Mining In California
n. Life On The Prairie/The Trapper's Defense, "Fire Fights Fire"
o. Life On The Prairie/The "Buffalo Hunt"
p. American Express Train
q. American Railroad Scene/Snow Bound
r. The "Lighting Express" Trains/"Leaving The Junction"
s. Terrific Combat Between The "Monitor" 2 guns & "Merrimac" 10 guns
t. The U.S. Battleship Maine
u. U.S. Ship Of The Line Ohio, 104 guns
v. The Whale Fishery "Laying On"

well it did not stop raining today, so i don't have a pic. to post, but it's the same as Rusty's.
thanks for the help Irv. so it seems like there may have been up to 1200 made and the blade is a Camillus.
supose i shoulda known that: a Cami X Schrade crossbreed, posing as a Sears.
Neat ! and it's a nice knife too.
"The Lightening Express" seems even more rare; meaning: i have never seen one on ebay (yet).

There was 2500 of them made so they are still around, their true value is $200 plus for that detail of acid etching, I sold a 1980 Aurum Buck 110 with far less detail for $400 only yesterday. Unlike the Buck 110 they are not Marked Aurum Etchings in the acid etch.

All those in the List posted by Irv were to be Aurums it was their project but only a few from list were ever completed. Schrade folding knife Aurums are quite rare comparetivly.

Irv how did you get those prints of the Aurum prototypes??
