Cushioned grinding?

I would love a rotary platen, but it's not an option for the kind of grinder I use. I've had moderate success before running a belt inside another belt, which does produce a somewhat cushioning effect, but it's not a great solution, and is probably not so safe either.

I've seen references here to gluing felt from Falcon Tool to a platen, but I'm not sure which type would be best (they have "white Spanish felt" and "fine Mexican felt," which are both available in hard, medium, and soft). Does anyone have any experience using this?

Or if you have another solution, I would love to hear about it!

Have a look at this. I use the same concept and it works great for polishing and blending. Use the same type of rubber your would use for a kydex press available from Mcmaster carr etc. then the graphite as Stacy mentioned. I cut the rubber into basically a large radius platen of 48" or something like that.

I can take a pic of my setup on my Hardcore grinder later this afternoon

I use leather. Doesn't last forever but holds up well. Run at lower speeds.

I had a similar question, but did not know where to ask it. Appreciate the information everyone!

I did the same thing as HSC a long time back with a radiused wooden platen and the graphite backing. It worked pretty well for grinding urasaki.

Thanks everybody; this is extremely helpful! HSC, are you using adhesive to attach the rubber to the platen? And how firm is the stuff? Wasn't sure which rubber you meant. Will be ordering the graphite canvas today.

Stacy, thanks for that tip about the wooden platen for urasuki! Will definitely try that as well.

i probably used a 3M adhesive spray... actually the tension of the belt holds it in place, I didn't use any glue for the graphite on top of the rubber/foam
the foam is one of these 2 items, I don't recall which one. - http://www.mcmaster.com/#3623K74 or http://www.mcmaster.com/#86375K124

note the "pressure to compress" is different on both in the Mcmaster Carr specs
