you should try posting this on the custom handmade knife section. and yes most custom makers can take your design and make it reality but it is going to cost you a little more when done like this.

Thanks i have just started on here and still trying to find my way around lol

Now now yes it is just realy not good with spelling . But i think you got the gist of it lol

Custom knives can be any of those options.

You can by a knife from a custom maker that was finished and put up for sale.

Or, you can have a knife made completely to your design. Materials, size, shape, etc etc.

If you like a maker, shoot them an email or call their shop. I think one of the best things for knife collectors now, is that you have both options. You can simply see a design and fall in love, or you can have something made for you.

Some makers don't like the hassle of dealing with orders, so they make what they want, and then sell it on here. Some shoot out an email with available knives to those on their lists.

Others have years and years of back orders to slog through.

Welcome, and enjoy the forum.

Thanks for that . Its something i have been toying with for a wail now and had the knife makers that i have looked at seem to wont to do there own thing . I have a gerber moniment that has a grate shape and a fab feel to it i would just like it in better steel i will keep on lookin

The easiest way to buy a custom knife is to shop here in the For Sale By Maker forum area.

Many makers will balk at making a knife that's the exact same design as someone else's. So you have a couple of options for having something similar made for you:
A) Browse the knives listed for sale, identify a maker who has a similar taste in designs and materials as you do, and sent them an email.
B) Post here in the Knifemaker Wanted forum area. Explain your design and the materials and see what sort of replies you get. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/871-Wanted-Knifemaker-Craftsman-Related-Services

For the record most makers will not copy an existing design, but if you go to one and tell them the points that you like about a particular design and what you would like improved on they will work with you to make your knife

I generally just buy what these knife people make. I'm usually very satisfied.

If you live around GA and are still interested, you can attend the 2014 Blade Show in Atlanta in early June. It's the largest show and hundreds of custom knife makers attend, have tables, and sell their stuff. You can handle a lot of different kinds of designs to see what you like. You can buy there. The alternative is often to wait a long time for a knife to be made just for you or keep your eyes peeled on the forum for things for sale.

There is a big show around in the East and one in the West each year put on by Blade. Go to their website and take a look. I assume you can also do the google thing as well.

Thanks . I am begining to see that lol i have been colleting knifes since i was about 6 and i am 44 now but the hole custom bit is new to me . But don't get me wrong i have seen some fab custom makers and knifes out ther . And i am hopping to go to one of the shows here in briton this year and find out more about it

Most custom makers only use their designs with a customers preferred layout (blade steels, handle materials, blade grinds, etc.) not too many will work with a customer's designs to make a new knife from scratch. The only maker i know(my knowledge isnt as extensive as most) of that will do this, is elliot from ferrum forge.

Patience is the key to finding the custom knife an maker that is right for you.

The OP lives in Great Britain. I'd say he has some idea of how the English language works. What might be helpful is if he used a spell checker before he posted. But he seems to be making himself understood without it.
