Has this knife ever been offered in any steel besides 420HC? I do not mean historically like 425 or 440c. I am thinking more modern like BG-42, Ats-34 or S30V. I know about a lot of special handles but the steel never seems to change. What special runs have I missed?

Also, has buck ever made a dropoint knife in almost or exactly the same size as the 102?

Thanks

Buck made a model 475 that has a slightly shorter blade with about the same size handle. Its a rubber handle. Nice little workhorse if you aren't looking for pretty.

do a search here for 475
Bottom one in this pic, hope this helps. Top one is a 470

I thought you would like the color Haebbie...:p I should have at least ironed it first.

Oh yeah,,,I chalked the tang stamps so they would show up. fwiw....

And while we are waiting on some professional info on the 102, do ya'll realize that a 110 is larger than a 102. Sometimes thats not very obvious unless they are all laid out together.

So maybe Dr Pepper would be interested in one of the drop point, sambar stag, S30V, BCCI fundraiser 110/112's from a couple years back.

I'll apologize for drifting this from fixed blades to folders... I just don't know of anything that matches the original question. And, thats just reflection that makes the front bolsters look like brass instead of their nickel silver

I love the 110 and 112. But.... why do they have to be so heavy? Would not lighter bolsters work and still be strong?

Pack Rat, those are pictures of the Mentor and Mini-Mentor right? Are they full tang?
How is the sheath?

Correct on Mentor/Mini. This set came with the piggyback nylon cordura sheath. Other than I get a strong magnet attraction at the butt end of the mini, I don't know about them being full tang. There is a slot in the end of the handle for, I guess, a lanyard, so no visible rear metal.

As far as weight of the 110/112. Definitely heavier than a 102. But in all my years of using a 110 on deer, It hasn't ever been a problem for me. I have used a 121 larger cousin of the 102, on deer, and it is also lighter than the 110.

The one thing that is really noticeable is, I miss the solid weight/feel of the 110 when using the 121. Like the 110 isn't going to go flying out of my hand feel, that I initially got when I first started using the 121.

And a fwiw,,, I don't carry any fixed blades on my belt when hunting. Just the 110. The truck is always near by with all the fixed or other blades in it.

That would be too cool for school to get a fixed with BG-42.

Here is a pic of the 102 for comparison with the 110AG and 120BR

Cool pic Goose!! I ran out of time earlier to set one up. Glaucoma is a bitch having to run to the eye guy.

But I have now gone through the toys and all the premium steel I have is BG42 in one of the overrun Master Series Vanguard 192's, a 118 stag with D2, some S30V in some 805 Signature Series, and the S30V in the AG Vanguards.
So all the premium steels except for the AG Fixed, seem to be limited to Custom/Limited Editions.

Thanks to Cabellas there are some S30V fixed and folder users.

No premium steel for a 102 in my toy box.

Those are beautiful!
Why doesn't Buck have those in regular production? Or even plain jane regular versions.
I like the 110/112 with the clip point but i generally prefer drop points to clips.
Back on topic i ordered a regular 102 Woodsman last week, i am looking forward to playing with it.
Woohoo that will be my second new Buck in the past six weeks (got a 110 about three weeks ago).

I'll take a shot at your question and let the guys throw darts at me.

The 110/112 were designed as hunting knives. Most hunting knives are used as skinning knives as well as other duties. Most all skinning knives have clip blades, or at least a modified clip.

Buck has other types that are drops.

Congrats on your new 110's...You will love it...

I thought the 110 was the perfect woods-walking companion. Oddly, acquiring my 102BR changed that. Then I watched that Brit-nitwit, Bear Grylls (At least Les Shroud cooks his food...), 'surviving' with his Bailey knife. I thought - that's nice - maybe a better woods-walker than the 102 - where can I get one? Then I found out - around $725 + s/h from England! I went to Benchmade - BM201 Snody Activator+ - <$100. Then Bark River - maybe the smallish Blackwater - $120. I picked up my 102 - I like it... I'll just get another one - maybe 'just' the regular handle/pommel/finger guard. I promise to never serve myself termites on it - or to strike the cutting edge on a firesteel!

I sure would like an ATS-34/BG-42/S30V 102, however...

What kind of blade material is on a 802... and, where does one start this quest??

And, thanks for the tip - and info!

S30V steel. Checkered walnut handles and mirror polished blade!

My local Gander had one on closeout a while back, I didnt buy :(

Otherwise keep your eyes open, online and at shows. Try google? There are quite a few around yet.
