Well for whatever it is worth I got my petes custom today. It is exceedingly sharp, and that is about it.I am somewhat disappointed. It appears to be no better then an off the rack 110. Same lateral blade play.Same difficulty with presenting the blade.
It has a very rough gritty opening. The damascus blade was covered on one side with hard lumps of some type of black substance. $136.56
The next one should arrive this week for $148.10
I would like to think it will be of a higher Quality but I doubt it. I've purchased $40.00
Case knives off the rack that are twice the knife that this is.I also have a Large Classic Sebenza
coming this week.I am not going to compare a $450.00 knife to one that costs $150.00. It wouldn't be fair, but from this sample, I have no idea
what you guys are all excited about. My buck is NOTHING to brag about.Of course when the next one arrives I may have to eat these words. We'll see.

Jeff,
If the knife from Pete's did not meet your expectations, send it back and write the folks at Buck a note why. I know they will make it right for you. They stand behind everything they make.

I am surprised to hear about your QA problem from the Custom shoppe. I have 3 knives from Buck from their shop and they were all perfect.

Don't get too frustrated, contact Joe Houser here at the forum and I bet he will have you send it directly to him. I am sure Pete will want to inspect your knife, too. The folks at BKI have my highest confidence and I am sure they will make this right.

A fellow Buck collector,

Thanks for the words Greg. I think I'll need to see what the other one is like, so I have something to compare it to.If the other one is the same. Then
Oh well ! That's the way they are made. The thing I hate about folders is the lateral play in the blade. Most have some, so I switched to buying fixed blades. This hasn't dissuaded me from buying Buck knives. I like em, especially the 110. I have about a half dozen. The cool thing about Petes' is you can get ALL the combinations you desire. The only other way I know of doing that, is to buy custom or spend a small fortune on a Sebenza. Btw. This is a very cool forum. It has dissipated a great deal of guilt I have around buying so many knives. My wife says I am obsessive, I say I'm a collector.
It is nice to know I have knife lovin kin out there. My fascination with knives has always been a mystery to me.

With all due respect, this is just ludicrous.

Ya' know, the damascus knife I ordered from PCKS has some side-to-side blade play. Not to point fingers or anything but this is the only that I have that was not made by Dana Queen. The other three (not damascus) are the highest quality knives that I have...including Benchmade, Spyderco,CRK&T etc.

No Case knife that I have ever seen can hold a candle to the first three examples that I have from PKCS and they are still way behind the fourth example even though it does has some blade play.

Has anyone else had this problem with the damascus blades?

Yes, My most recent Damascus PCKS had, to my way of thinking, excessive side-to-side play. Joe has it now, we'll see how it is when it gets back.

This whole issue of blade play has cought us by surprise. The majority of the ones i have seen had two things in common. First off, the blade play was within our range of acceptability. Second, they were almost all nickle silver.
Having said that, I do believe that the standard should be tightened on Pete's knives. The customer has spoken and thats good enough for me.
I have been working with Dana and a couple of long time 110 makers on a fix for the NK knives. It looks promising.
Please send the knife back to us and let us make it right for you!

So far I've got eleven knives from PCKS and none of them display anything near excessive blade play. In fact, more than half are rock solid and the others can be felt to move ever so slightly side to side. While I do feel that PCKS 110's should be nice and tight from the beginning, the design of the folding hunter does in fact need a little clearance for smooth blade opening and closing. I own a 110 from around 1968 that has been used but well cared for that is plenty tight that has this slight felt side to side movement of the blade in the bolster. This should be considered normal for 110's and copies of them like the Schrade LB-7. (Note: Only test for side to side play with the blade fully locked open, as play will seem excessive otherwise due to the design of the lockback knife.)

If you feel your Buck has excessive blade play then send it back for warranty repair. The guys and gals at Buck Knives will jump through flaming hoops and leap tall buildings and swim the Pacific and whatever else it takes to make it right by you! A great bunch of people. :)

Eleven???? Can I send my wife to you when I buy my next one?

There's 3 on my "want" list, and I have seven now. The only one with any problem is NS, oak, and damascus blade

Really pretty, and I look forward to getting it back from Joe!

Sure Al, I'll just tell her that you ordered it for me! You'll just have a bit of trouble explaining your name on the blade. Hmmmm, you could say that the scouts want to see more different PCKS knives and that you just HAVE to oblige.

I thank you all for your input. On Folsoms' knife I can actually see it is a Damascus blade, On mine, which also happens to have NS bolsters the blade
was so covered with this hard black coating I thought it had been dipped in paint.I had to steelwool it off to see that it was infact Damascus.I'm a real easy going guy, but I just measured the blade play an it is 1/8 inch..
IT's goin back!

When I took that picture, it still had a fairly heavy coating of something black, so the damascus didn't really stand out. I've since taken Flitz and rubbed it down well, and the damascus is beautiful. It's a really sweet knife to carry to work! (I want it back -- sniff, sniff)

Thanks, Warhawk. Actually, I just came back from a week at camp with 38 scouts, and I was figuring I deserved SOMETHING for having survived that. ;) Maybe another visit to PCKS is in the works!
