Last year I made this scales for my 277. They are made from a very old antler I got from a friend.

Hope you like them.

Thanks for watching.

That's some great looking antler and a great looking job you did with it. You should be proud.

Thanks.

The antler had pointy spikes on it. I had to sand them down quite a bit to be able to take a firm grip without them leaving deep marks in my hand.

Someone here knows what animal (deer?) this antler belonged to ??

Well David,

If you hold my hand in the fire, I would yell out Red Stag...then Reindeer ???

That looks great. I'm looking to buy some scales on Ebay and do the same for my Cabelas Alpha Hunter Folder in S30V. What tools did you use to make the cuts and polish?

I noticed one side does not have the point near the finger groove.

Thanks. I don't think it is Reindeer either, they have no spikes like this. I found a Reindeer (Elk) antler in Norway during a canoo trip and it is smooth and much smaller.

Thanks you.

Tools? Sandpaper and a lot of elbowgrease. :D At first I sawed two pieces that where wide enough. I sanded them down on a flat surface (-3 or -4 mm), on glass I believe it was.
I wanted to make them a bit thinner but there was not enough material, hence the no point on one side. Making them thinner would make them not wide enough.

To completely cover the wide you need quite a thick antler. The greater the circle, the thinner you can make them. This antler was 43 mm thick.

I did not polish it alot, only sanded down the pointy spikes. A high polish would take some more time, maybe later. :)

Maybe there are other technics to fold it flat or something. Others will now much more about this.

The Reindeer are more like our Caribou not Elk. The Elk got its name from the Native American's word Wapti and has different structured antlers. In Norway they use the word Elg for Moose. DM

Instead of making a new thread, I decided to post pics here of the custom scales I just finished for a Cabelas AG Alpha Hunter Folder. Purchased the India Sambar Scales from fellow member VCM3 (Vince). Must say there is nothing I have seen that compares to India Sambar. This was my first ever build.
