Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone could recommend me a custom axe maker. Been wanting a good chopper for a while now and I thought custom would be the way to go. I'm talking full sized axe, not hatchets. Apart from that I don't really have any other specifications yet.

Thanks in advance,
Tim.

Hi Tiiiiiiim, talk to steve Liley (Coal Creek forge), he does some great old style axes. He has a bunch of posts on the forum right now so you can see his workmanship.

Regards

Robin

Tiiiiiiim, I made a post on your thread over on the bladesmith section about finding older axes, the brands to look for etc...Me and Lisa have made full size axes in the past and to be honest its a great deal more work than folks realize. We make all our stuff by hand and weld in HC cutting bits..So its that much more work for us..Unless you have big equipment its very time consuming...Take a look at this video, this is the way we made them. We didnt have the benifit of a 150 power hammer either,LOL..You can see what I mean..You should really consider a older brand quaility axe. For less than $50 you can have a very fine axe..

Thanks ben. not REALLY my style. A bit too zombie chopper for me.

Interesting. I've had folks talk about killing zombies with the machetes/bush sword I make, but this is the first time I've seen one of my axes referred to as a zombie chopper. I assure you, clearing brush was in mind when I forged 'em, not de-animating the undead. :) I'll have some later on with more of a combat role in mind.

I dunno maybe it's just the checker plate background. ha ha. I just prefer the larger head with a cleaner look. I'm not big on the "old/aged/rustic look".

"Ben R.T" is another name you should look out for. Quiet chap but makes great stuff from L6.

My axe arrived in the mail from Sweden today (via the UK)! I ended up going with a Hults Bruk forrest axe. Pretty much identical to the Gransfors Bruks. It's technically a Hultafors because they bought out HB but they're still made by HB in the HB factory. It comes with a nice leather slip and a hickory handle and came shaving sharp. I went with the Hults Bruk because my hatchet is an old HB. I'm sure I'll still buy custom at some stage. The handle length is 20” (50cm), and the weight of the head is 0.85Kg.

I had a bit of a chop in the backyard.
