Hello everyone!

I am looking for a bladesmith who will make me a combat bowie, or at least work with me towards that end.

I practice a knife fighting style in the fashion of the late Mike Inay, who personally has instructed me, and my instructors.

The Inayan system is Phillipino in origin, and utilizes slashing type cuts, checks, parries, and traps, etc.

I feel that the combat bowie with a large, heavy blade would be an ideal weapon for me to use as a home/personal defense tool, and would work well with the knife fighting style that I would incorporate.

Any suggestions?

thank you for your time.

Jerry Hossom certainly knows how to make a fighting blade. I don't think I would call his knives "heavy", but they are definitely well-built, and I've never felt anything come alive in my hands like his work. Maybe some other forumites could put some links to the "Review" page for comments on his work, or insert some of their own comments . . .

GITCH-U,
Lots of great makers out there but I gotta second the suggestion for Jerry Hossom. Some very fine designs, top-notch materials, great fit and finish with handle ergonomics second to none. His blades all typically feature deep hollow grinds so they are not heavy but are wickedly quick in the hand. For more pics of blades coming from Jerry's bench you might check out Fire Horse's site http://homepage.mac.com/zombiekiller/retribution_dog/index.html

I was going to say Jerry Hossom, but I guess they beat me to it...He makes awesome battle blades.

hey guys,
Hossom's are a good bet and unbelievably alive in ones hand... but I gotta recommend a little known maker that I ran into at the show in Eugene in April, '02 - Fred Ott. You can check his work out at knifeart.com. I have two of his blades: a 9"camp knife forged out of 1084 (I think) that is a super knife to work with, and I have a @9" swedge-point bowie (with 3" of sharpened swedge) that's also forged, that cuts like the dickens on the forward AND back slashes. I don't know any particular formal knife combatives... but I'd love to see this one employed by someone who does!
Good luck... it's just that there are too many good makers out there now to really narrow it down!

I have not worked with the other makers mentioned but, remember when I first met Jerry Hossom at a small hotel show in Dallas, Texas. Since I was so new and green at the time, I failed to fully appreciate what I saw on his table.

Jerry Hossom's blades have been well tested by people who really now what they are looking at and working with, not bar stool commando's and Rambo wanna be's.

Jerry's blades are among the best and, his style has some uniqueness I have not found in other blade. I am not overly strong, spending most of my day at a desk but, even a wimp like me can wield a monster blade of Jerry's. The word that always comes to mind when I hold his knife is balance - it literally comes alive in your hand. Simply awesome.

Another vote for Mr. Hossom..., hard to beat the form and function! Jerry's knives feel like a simple extension of you hand/arm..., with reasonable prices, and incredible customer service for those lucky enough to have a few.
