as some of you know, i just got my first benchmade, an 880S dark star.

as some of you know, this knife has gold-tone titanium liners to it... but i am not too found of gold, just thought it was too good to pass up.

so my question: would any of you have the liners hard chromed?
as with my pistols, i am a custom nut, and would love to have these liners a silvery-chrome color

got a guy here in TPA that hard chromes my pistols mags and did my uncle's sig sauer.

what do ya' thank?

Many people modify their production knives around here. Just keep in mind, the modification will probably void Benchmade's warranty. Also, folders are made with very tight tolerances, and the added chrome on the liners will change their thickness.

I don’t know if it’s possible to chrome plate titanium. You could have the liners anodized a different color. I like the looks of the gold myself.

anodizing would be another option, thanks for the tip.

anywhere you know of that does it?

Post on the maker's forum and ask for someone to heat color your ti liners. Heat coloring produces colors too, and the oxidation layer is ahrder and therefore more durable.

I have the original style of that knife, called the sentinel. It has black aluminum side pieces and blue ti liners.. it is good :) I hated the Dark Star colors. If you are a bit mechanically inclined, you could sand the liners yourself, pop out the detent ball, heat color the liners with a simple propane torch, re-insert the ball, and re-assemble the knife (all while voiding the warrantee). I'm not sure how to remove/add the ball, so you could ask that on the shop talk forum as well.

Happy modding!

Excuse my ignorance but can't you polish the ti back to it's original color?
Thanks,
Matt

wow, so many options...

heat coloring and polishing both sound good. but since i don't have a torch at the moment, i might have to polish.

i will post over at the suggested forums and see if i can get some tips on polishing.

thanks again for the tips
