Custom Blade Steel

I was just curious to see if anyone has made a custom blade for a knife. For example, I love the benchmade adamas but I want to test out a new steel for it such as 3v or m4 instead of the d2. Is it possible to get a different steel for my production knife?

Andrew Demko made a new blade for a Cold Steel knife for a member here, but that was a couple years ago.

The Mini-Griptilian is available with a handful of different blade steels, and Spyderco mixes up blade steels on some of their knives, but I haven't heard of other companies doing it.

The cost of doing things on an industrial scale means that a big company has to be pretty sure of a market for the product before they go making changes, so many companies are risk-averse: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I believe that many custom makers would be willing to try re-blading a knife for you, with the understanding that it would violate any and all warranties from the factory.

You should also be very sure that you are not going to want to sell the knife, some time in the future, because then you would be liable for a copyright violation lawsuit.

To get a custom maker make you a copy of a production knife in a different steel? In theory, yes. But reputable knifemakers often don't make copies of other people's work. They certainly wouldn't want people making copies of their work.

You would be better served by just having a custom maker build you a new knife from the ground up, with whatever blade steel you like. As the others said, most independent makers will have their own designs and would prefer not to blatantly copy a production model.
