I am interested in STR doing some custom work on a couple of Buck Knives. What I need is a pocket clip and a one armed bandit, opening stud on a Buck 186. The situation is detailed in this thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=713704

What would be a cost estimate for this much work (please feel free to pm me).

I also might want the same work done on a new EcoLite, and was wondering if that was possible, given the new handle material.

My thanks. You come very highly recommended.

First of all thanks for asking. The 186 I think I am familiar with but pictures of the models help. I am very bad with keeping up with the number of each model with the exception of very few. If you said 110 obviously I'd know but other less visible ones I really need a gentle reminder. Any link would help too.

I tried to find some but didn't really get much. I will try again here shortly.

The thumb stud is probably not a big deal usually, however be advised that just because you have a stud on the blade doesn't mean it will be 'thumb friendly' once it is mounted. If you own a lockback and a Buck it could mean its a stout spring and although possible to open one handed it sometimes requires a thumb as stout as the spring to muscle the blade open.

Pocket clip is probably doable also but that can often depend on what the material is made of that I will have to drill and thread as well as available places to actually find a good level mount area that will not interfere with any of the internal parts or weaken it by drilling into a pin hidden by high polish.

As always its necessary for me to see the folder(s) to know what I need but many times I can see what I need by pictures or even a flat bed scanner shot of the side you want the clip mounted and anything else relevant to the job request.

When you do decide to mail to me I have set up an easy to use form that can be found in one of two sticky posts that are always at the top of the page here on my forum or on my other forum on knifedogs.com

Find the thread titled "Low Rider Clip and Mail Instruction" or the "Read this if you need to mail me work" thread and you can find all you need to know to get any job to me along with other details.

Cost on a job like this usually runs between $40 and $50 for the stud and clip combined but it depends on the type of thumb stud used which can mean an expensive fancy one or a plain jane one and the cost diff as well as a bigger drill bit for some or multiple sizes for others than the one I am thinking and since the drill bit required to drill a hardened blade is a carbide it is not a cheap drill but usually runs me about $15 to $25 per drill depending on the diameter and shipping to get it to me. I don't stock many of these and only use them when called for so its usually something I have to pass on to the customer.

As for the clip that part is all in the form info so I'll let you read the rest there.

Again I appreciate you asking and coming to visit my forum. I've been out of town for the last week so I'm just now getting back to normal here at the house. Sorry if you have been waiting for a reply. Haven't had much access to a computer for the last six days or so.

Sounds good. The knife is being sent to me by Buck 110, another BF member, and I will send it along to you as soon as it arrives.

On other issues:

--no problem on the stout spring. I have a one-armed bandit on a standard 110 and have no problem opening it.

--wow! I didn't realize you would actually drill through the blade; I'm impressed. You can actually use a one armed bandit attachment, as far as I'm concerned. The only place I could find them is here: http://www.jaysknives.com/customknives_4.htm

--regarding stud, plain is better.

--I would like the clip be tip down (i.e. clip at the base of the knife, where the blade tip ends, rather than at the end where the joint is; I'm never sure of the nomenclature)

--do you think you can work with this knife? The handles are made of a new material, PaperStone: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BU112GRS4

Those one armed bandits are not as nice and I never liked em much personally.

Stud or the other is fine if you want to have one stuck on it. Just get it and ship it with the knife. I don't know about that material on the other folder. Never seen it or drilled it let alone threaded it. It may not hold threads at all in which case you'd have two holes in it that could be unsightly.

Steve--

Just letting you know the knife went out by USPS this morning, should get to you in a few days. I filled out the sheet you requested and enclosed it; it contains my email address and phone number when you need to get it touch (i.e for the amount due). I look forward to seeing how things turn out.

Will do. Thanks for the heads up.
