Well of late....That is a good question!!!
I and others have seen knives and dont know if they are Buck Factory or some after marketter turning out wuestionable Buck Customs...
here is one i wandered on :

emails on this were not answered...
if any one knows let me know...
any one else have these same questions of "it is factory ?!?!?"

Hi Dave,

I have obsreved these and a few others with the same type of colored etching. One was a Duke 500 of Columbus and another was a 110 with Elvis on the blade. I do not like the Turkey with the red coloring.....However, would get the Duke and the King (they come in wooden box's). These do look like some after market stuff...not factory.

I do believe these were discussed in a thread awhile back. I believe Richard Matheny???? Said these were done by a company in Pennsylvania?

I could be wrong but I believe JB hit the nail on the head!

Nope! :thumbdn: Not done in Buck's factory. :thumbdn: Aftermarket "custom limited edition".

maby this thread could be a sticky for any custom question?
post its pict get an answer! what think ?

DDave, I got sucked into those "custom limited editions" earlier this year when the fever took me......just couldnt believe ALL those really neat Buck knives.....bought some of them...paid more than they are probably really worth.....since I have "refined" my taste by experience I know longer find most of them of any interest....rather now go for stag/bone/ or true Limited Editions made by Buck at Buck's factory. I am tracking most of these in my 110 Database.

DDAve, one of those sold on July 8 for $50.99 plus shipping, the only one I have caught so far this month.....hey, its still a good 110 and if ya like red turkeys.....well

IMHO, the quality of the engraving is excellent...much better than the etchings or the silk-screened pictographics on some of the Bucks I've seen...(although I've only seen Dave's pic of this one)...stamping the number on top of the pivot pin is pretty lame...

It pretty much depends on your tastes...I like raw steel...again, in my opinion, the only reason to add scrollwork, filligreeing, graphics, etc is to cover up some flaw/mistake in the blade/bolster...

...But I'm sure someone will buy this one...and others like it...

So when a known custom maker or enhancer like Prater buys Buck blanks and puts his own handles on them and does some file and scroll work is it a custom, well it is customized... many of them are great looking knives not really meant to be users more for show and thats fine with a lot of basic collectors.

I think the term "limited editition" is somewhat missleading though

 ...hmmm...I wasn't aware that one could purchase "Buck blanks" to be used as a canvas for a person's imaginative talents. This is somethin' I may have to delve into a bit further... ( after I find some imaginative talent ) ...:D

Buck sells a lot of knives to third party's who modify them for their purposes, it could be a new handle inlay, inlays added to an existing handle, file work or a blade etch. They sell both the basic knife and a skeleton without inlays and unfinished bolsters. As a collector, you have to know the product well enough to differentiate the factory work from the third party stuff when you make your purchases. This includes Yellowhorse products that were sold through Buck vs. knives they sold themselves.

The latest word I got was that we are not selling skeletons to anybody. We have in the past, most notibly to the Yellowhorse's.

Well, that "turkey knife" sold for $48 bucks, still not bad for a Buck 110 regardless of what was printed on it by whomever. :D

I read in Bernard Levine's forum that their "are" people
that collect fake knives.
This is a real Buck knife with aftermarket etching.

yes there are... i run in to one some ware and they collected fakes
not jest bucks either on that guy...
then there was a guy on ebay that bid on 110 fake
naw i knew this was a real buck but it was that i got no answer on
if it was buck etching or some one elses.
i mean buck outsorces acid etching and gold plateing as it is...
so it was primarly a question of if it was from buck that way or bought from buck and done later and being passed off as from buck that way..
and not who it was done by....
