I have recently become enamoured with both Buck Knives and knives with handles made of materials like bone, stag, elk, antler and so on.

Since I'm turning 30 this year, I figured I could treat myself to a buck knife with one of the mentioned handle materials.

I have seen that Buck's website allows you to customize certain models, like the 110 and 112 with different blade steels and elk handles. However, they will only ship these custom orders to the U.S. and Canada. I happen to live in the Netherlands, where I can't find what I'm looking for even after looking around really hard. Someone advised me to ask my local retailer for army surplus supplies about custom orders, but I want to research possible alternatives before committing to that route.

So, how would I go about procuring such a knife?

Thank you in advance.

P.S. I've looked around the forum for a similar thread, and haven't found anything. However, if this thread is inappropriate for this forum or if I've missed a similar thread, please accept my apologies.

I don't know the rules about promoting other websites by name but you can find custom Buck knives for sale on "the big Auction web site" the bay.

You can also find "package forwarding" businesses. A concept where through a third party you effectively have a U.S address for shopping purposes etc.
Item is bought by you. Then shipped to a rerouting station or some such then sent to you.

Lodd,
There is a simple solution to your delema.
Contact me ,I will order your knife and send it to you .
Easy.
We can work out the details .Click on my forum name to email me

Any action or sale where there is a mention of a fee or a cost should occur using email or the BladeForum Private Mail in your profile. You may request help and it can be given as long as no money issues are mention in the open forum. As has occurred above you may volunteer to help someone find what they need.

To the OP I would suggest you contact long time and highly reguarded Buck Forum member Haebbie, who is located in Germany, and request pointers in finding, ordering and receiving Buck knives on the Continent. I think he will be helpful.

As I understand it based upon an attempt to order an Elk handled knife from the Custom Shop, there are some legal restrictions that apply to the Elk only when shipping out of North America. It is probably a US conservation regulation that keeps our Elk herd safe. You can order Buffalo Horn, G10, or the wood scales, as I was told.

That's news to me Doc but the laws are really changing lately. I don't see any harm to the Elk picking up sheds and that's what Buck uses.

If they allowed Elk outside NA I can guarantee you that poaching would reduce the Elk herd drastically. Over hunting already nearly killed them off and completely did so in the Eastern US and Canada. They are being restocked but they are not like Whitetail that have actually increased with hunting and deforestation and the extermination of predators.

India had to protect its Stag population because of the popularity of this material for knives and other things.

Here is my wildlife biologist comments without research.
Elk "sheds" are bought and sold in many western states. Boy Scouts of Jackson Hole, WY collect the sheds from the wintering herd of the valley and a large auction occurs in the spring with funds going to the Scout organizations of the area. At the moment within the U.S. I am not aware of any law restricting trade in elk sheds.
It may be entirely different when you cross borders. Ivory that is historic, is not illegal to possess. Its the sale of it that is ruled by laws.

Elk antler has a smaller matrix like core than whitetail or mule deer antler and so is considered better knife scale material for its thicker hard working depth. The soft area in some whitetail antlers can almost be half or more of the diameter. The desire and use of 'imported' to the US antler is sought out because it has much smaller soft 'core' area.

Several folks specialize in training shed "pointers", dog they wander the hills with who find and fetch the antler or rack to the owner.

I am certain Buck Knives acquires there elk scales from one of the several major dealers of the western U.S.. But on the subject I think more production time should be used in matching the sides properly.....

Well, for whatever reason, Buck Custom told me that they have a policy of not shipping Elk out of NA. I was able to choose any of the other offerings, however.

Doc, I think it is just easier to say no than to deal with possibility of a export violation. It is a violation to export any antler, shed or otherwise, illegally taken. Lets say you pick one up in a wild area of a state park where shed hunting is not permitted.
You get it home, tire of it and sell it to someone who sells it to a supplier of Buck scales. Buck exports the knife and then they are in violation of exporting a illegally taken antler. Now that is a far fetched and likely unprovable tale. But, it would be easier for the company to just not export than to ever worry about the details. Laws like that were written for the bad guys that are out to make money, not Joe citizen. And there are plenty of people sneaking into Private No Trespassing land, parks and reserves, shed hunting for the money . I have a couple of elk sheds I picked up elk hunting in the mountains of CO, I don't plan to sell them or send them out of country. When I eventually go to the nursing home I will trade them to a knife maker for a small folder that they may not let me keep in the home.

Thank you all for contributing to this thread. My apologies for not replying sooner, since posting this thread I've found my life has turned a lot more hectic. This means it'll probably take some more time for me to get it done.

I've seen some good alternatives for what I had in mind. I will carefully weigh the pros and cons of each before committing to a certain option.

For the fellow forumites that offered to forward the package to me, you have my thanks. However, I have never traded or bought anything on this forum before, so I hope you understand I'm a bit apprehensive. However, I will definitely take your offers into consideration.

I might postpone the purchase a bit to when things quiet down a bit again, but at least I have good directions now. Thank you all once again!
