I bought a Case Sodbuster the other day and I learned all that I could from the guys in the traditional fixed and folders section.

As some of you may know, I linger more in the tacticool, big-beefy, thors hammer, types of areas on bladeforums, so this was my eagle scout roots kicking in on this quick buy.

I couldn't stand the thought of having the knife fumbling around at the bottom of my pocket, or having to wear an additional pouch (I keep a SOG powerlock on my belt 24/7), so I did a little customizing to meet my "One Handed" needs.

Here's a few pics from my cell phone, hope you guys like what I did. Feel free to leave some feedback on how it looks (good or bad so I'll know what to do in the future).

The clip is from my 12400 NRA Steigerwalt, and the thumb stud is from my SOG Vulcan which I no longer use. To get the holes in the handle, I just used a 1/16 drill bit. For the hole in the blade for the thumbstud, I used a dremel with two different sized diamond bits. That hole took about 30-45 minutes to drill out. I also had to slightly shorten the screw for the thumb stud because the vulcan is a lot thicker than this knife. Hope you guys like it, J.

looks like a very cool, handy mod...

how does the one handed opening work? nice and smooth?

Looks like you did good work, very nice! I may be wrong, but I assume the steel in that knife is true sharp ss, I don't remember seeing black handle soddies with cv blades.

Great job! It aint easy puttin a hole in hardened stainless steel.I hear a carbide drill bit is the best way to go.

That's exactly what I'd like to do to most Cases. The sodbuster, I think, lends itself the best.

Very Nice.

You may be right, my sodbuster has an SS stamp underneath the model number, and it says plainly "stainless" on the main blade. I don't know how I missed that :o......so, does anybody know what "true sharp ss" is? or at least what it is comparable to?

Thanks for all the replies, J.

The thumb stud works great for me, but it is kind of tough to get it started on the opening. Luckily my thumb is all calloused up from playing with knives all the time. The clip is my favorite and simplest part. I just wanted the thumb stud on there for the convienience if I ever needed it.

A quick question for you, as a knife maker. When I put oil on the pivot area, a black goo comes out and the blade pivot feels even more dingy than it did before, is there some way to fix this or is this normal?

Thanks in advance, J.

I'd try a thorough flush with WD40 (to get the currently accumulated gunk out) followed by lubing with one of the many non-oil(y) lubricants recommended frequently on this forum.

often times with Case that's polishing compound from when they "haft" the pieces. My m.o.p. coke bottle had a big gob of compound crusted in the shield, but a toothpick got it right out. Lucky Bob has the right idea here, though I like to use Blue Juice valve oil from my local music store. A little goes a long way.
