I have recently purchased a CQC-5 and a CQC-6. The CQC-6 is an older piece that has the "Emerson" logo and filework on the top and bottom of the bolster. I have been told by several sources that the filework is a feature that was eliminated on the newer SpecWar customs. The CQC-5 is a SpecWar custom but it ALSO has the filework on the bolsters. Is this unusual?

Never argue with a man that wears a size 5 hat.

Arkhamdrifter-you may want to contact Tamishigiri. He's got a closet full of Emerson customs and seems to know an awful lot about them.

The filework was done on the older CQC6's and CQC5's. Since any existing CQC5's were made several years ago, they also have the filework. The filework has since been eliminated but I guess that you could request it.

That's great that you got a CQC5. Aren't there supposed to be around 10 made. I've heard 5+1 total.

The CQC5 is a three quarter size CQC6. They're virtually identical in ratio, just different sizes. Ernie has only made a few 5's, although I saw several at Blade West a few years ago, so I think the number made is more than most people guess. I also saw the one with serial number 001 on it, and none that I've ever seen has had filework. I've never seen a 6 with it either, in real life or pictures, and that includes old ones, new ones, Ernie's personal knife, and a few fancy ones (pearl and damascus). What does the filework look like? Is it in addition to the knurling he used to put on his old 6's, stopped for awhile, and has now restarted? I'd love to see a picture, anyway.

Tattoo was kind enough to send a pic, so now I realize we're talking about the knurling he puts on the bolster that fits into the thumb ramp, and on the bottom where the finger guard blossoms. It is a great feature that he stopped using for a while - around '95 -'97 - but has happily returned to the knife.
