Howdy,
today was a very good day because my custom Andrew Demko AD-10 was delivered! I ordered this knife at the beginning of July 2010, so the wait has been almost 10 months. However, Andrew correctly predicted the wait time, so this didn't come as a surprise. From what I understand, the wait now is much longer and some people have even mentioned that Andrew has stopped accepting orders all together.
Anyway, I wanted to show off a few pictures of my knife. I decided to go with a very basic version of Andrew's knife. I have owned a Cold Steel AK-47 folder for some time and I really like that knife. So I wanted something similar in size and weight.
Here's what I ordered:
- this is the smaller of Andrew's two sizes, I think it has a 3.5" cutting edge.
- I chose a linerless G-10 handle much like the standard Cold Steel knives. I don't think I will ever need the strength that titanium liners add to the knife. This knife is so burly already without liners, I can never see myself using it to its full capacity!
- the blade is made from CPM154. Thickness is 0.200", which makes for a very strong blade that still slices well due to Andrew's hollow grind. I didn't specify a bladegrind, so Andrew just chose to grind a nice swedge on it. This grind leaves plenty of meat behind the tip. The only negative thing about the knife that I can mention is that the swedge is ground a little unevenly between the two sides, that's all. Any marks you see on the blade are not scratches or imperfections, but rather fingerprints from my greasy mitts handling the blade all day!
- the edge on this knife is also fantastic. It is not sharpened on a belt, Andrew must use an Edge Pro or some other sharpener to do the final sharpening, it's nicely polished.
- of course this knife comes with the Tri-Ad lock. The lock is very smooth and has none of the stickiness you sometimes encounter in the production Cold Steel models. Lockup is tight with a loud clack, no bladeplay in any direction.
- in one of the pictures below you can see the very stylish bead blasted pivot. Not only does this pivot look very good, it is also brutally thick! There is a lot of material there and the actual post going through the blade has crazy wall thickness. The blade hole is very cleanly cut and has a precision fit around the pivot pin, again very smooth. Finally, Andrew uses an extremely fine-pitch thread on his pivot screw, this makes fine adjustments possible!
- the price for this custom knife is more than reasonable. In this configuration, it still costs less than a basic Strider SMF.
All in all, this knife is totally awesome! I'm glad that I made it onto the order list early! To everybody who is waiting for one of these knives, it's worth it!!!
Now some pictures! I added my AK-47 so people could have a size reference.
