Hey guys,

I've been on the lookout for cheap but good Firesteels lately, most of the ones you can get here are crap or extremely expensive (around $20 for the LMF Scout model, for example). Today, when I paid my favorite store in Berlin a visit, they had some broken cheap BlastMatch ripoffs laying around, and gave me one of the surprisingly good ferro rods for 3,50 € (~5$). I found the handle of an old screwdriver, some 30 minute epoxy, a drill, a file, and some time later I ended up with this:

And it throws some nice sparks.

(the sparks you see are actually from 4-5 strikes, I kinda messed up with the exposure time)

This is quite bulky, but I really like the size of the handle, it's really convenient. It goes into my Maxped M1 waist pack which contains my tinder, firestraws, and some other stuff I might need on my person in the outdoors.

So, I'm curious. Show me your custom and DIY firesteels!

take care

I really like it. Would be harder to lose it in the grass too. Good job.

Nice. You can get LMF blank rods for around $10 then handle them yourself. You can get blank misch metal rods as well, but I much prefer the LMF type. I'm kinda surprised how expensive the LMF rods over there, while only slightly more expensive than from the States, I woulda thought coming from the same side of the Atlantic would keep the price down a little bit.

I saw different sizes of misch metal rods in an american online shop, but if you pay $5 for the rod and $20 for shipping and customs, it's just not worth it. Where would I get LMF blanks? Is that available in Germany? Sounds interesting, I'd love to hear more about this.
