Does anyone know of a maker who can do a elephant toenail, or sunfish for less than$500, ideally less than $400? All I can find is Don Hanson, and his knives while incredible are a bit too expensive!!

Thanks, Steven

Those things are hard to make and do a good job so finding one in that price range will be tuff.

Salty,Jeff Claiborne makes this pattern.I do not know his pricing & I am not sure if he uses ss for blades
Here is his tel # 317 - 736 - 7443

I made one, and I do NOT plan on making another one any time soon, if ever?
The one I made turned out really nice, BUT like Tony said NOT an easy knife to make. :(

Good luck on your quest.

Jeff mostly uses 52100, but in his brochure he lists a variety of steels, including several stainless, that he is willing to use.

*checked last night -- no stainless steels listed. Sorry for the bad info.

Hi Todd!

You made me curious. Why is this pattern so hard to make?

swe,

It's in the shape of the knife, just hard to get the fit perfect.
Ex specially at the front at bolster & blade it all has to come together just right.
I do not use screws in my knives were I can put it together & take it apart to check the fit.
Also I do not use a pattern to make my knives, I just build the knife from scratch.
The knife HAS to be just right before you pin it, or your screwed.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the info Todd!

I inspected my Case Elephant Toenail and I think that I understand what you mean.

Your welcome, and to add here.......
Any slip joint knife is NOT really easy to make, they are some of the hardest knives to make, and to make well.
If you know what I mean? :)

I have a Claiborne Toenail that I bought as my first ever custom slipjoint. Billy at Vintage Knives sometimes has stuff from Jeff in stock.

52100 for the blades and 1095 for the springs. Integral bolsters and liners. I like it a lot.

I was fortunate enough to find one of Don's older sunfish patterns here on the forums for less than $400. Jigged rosewood and damascus. Don't give up, you never know...

You may wish to contact Howard Faucheaux for your Toenail. He makes a darn fine equal end for a reasonable fee. I have owned a few of his pieces and have liked them all. Very nice gentleman to talk to as well. The last contact info I had for him is below.
