A lot is written about true customs, here I think is real example.

I asked David Broadwell to design a Wharncliffe folder that would identify with him. He sent a page of drawings from which a
design was chosen. Not long after I recieved
the finished product. Keep in mind I chose the steel, handle material, inlay for button.

Now it was off to Julie Warenski for engraving. Unless your more talented than the engraver I let them choose a format. Julie is the Queen when it comes to Gold inlay and scroll. She only had the bolsters and spacer to work from. The result can be seen here:

Many months of time and enough miles to get a
free ticket and the finished product arrived
home only on Wednesday. Thought you might enjoy the Before/After pictures.

Happy Holidays,
Win Heger

PS: Can't wait to do another.

Beautiful, Win. Congrats on a wonderful collaboration. Isn't it great when a knife immediately becomes a family heirloom.

BTW, I noticed you refer to it as having a backspring (as opposed to a back spacer). Is this a D/A auto?

Win: I am certainly not an experienced collector, but I know what I like. Your work of art is truly one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Really amazing! Congratulations.

Win. Absolutly beautiful. What a fantastic idea! I have never seen Warenski engraving on one of David's knives before. I am sure you are and will enjoy it.

Very nice Win....nice scan too!

love that blade shape and the pearl looks nicely coloured as well.

Wow, that is something.

What did you have the Bolsters made of? Is this the prefered material for engraving?

Great knife, Win. I like it that you gave Julie artistic freedom. It is amazing when you look at a knife and think it can't get any better in design, fit, and expression, then a world class engraver comes along and turns a world class maker's knife into something really special.
Julie's work is phenominal and I will make sure everyone gets an opportunity to share it. I will be doing Buster and Julie Warenski's web site sometime early next year, so I hope I can compliment their work as good what I see on your knife.

Fantastic knife Win.If you don't mind answering which cost more the knife or the engraving?

Thanks for all the kind words on this folder.
I wanted to answer a few questions.

Bronco - right should read "spacer". Thanks

Gus - Your knowledge always amazes me. Julie
did one other - a Sub-hilt, I believe.

G2 - Thanks, I followed G2's advise and
bought an Epson 1200U scanner.

Bo - Bolsters are 416SS, preferred by most
engravers. You have to tell the maker
the knife will be engraved.

Bob - I appreciate your kind words. You'll
really enjoy working with Buster and
Julie.

Robb - Great question. The knife cost more.
Good engraving ain't cheap but neither
are great knives. You really have to
be careful not to engrave a knife that
will not hold up to the engraving.

If anyone wants to do a project and needs advise please let me know.

Thanks,
Win Heger

Win, that is a truly beautiful knife, you should be very proud.
I just recently had my first custom folder made from my drawings by Art Washburn. Not as fancy as yours, but exactly what I was looking for in an EDC knife.
I started a thread on General to encourage other folks to have a custom knife made for themself.

There is a special feeling of working with a maker and watching it come together that you just don't get from buying off a makers table or from off of a website. I don't think it matters if it's a tactical fixed blade or a fancy folder.
