Recently, I commissioned Greg Haugh who works closely with JoJo’s Gunworks to assemble a Fallkniven F1 Blade blank. He makes all of the custom 1911 grips for their high end pistols. Greg has many years of experience custom building single action revolver and 1911 pistol grips. Without explicitly stating what company Greg worked for, I can say it was a large company based in Hartford, CT that currently makes firearms in the U.S. Get it? Greg is the craftsman responsible for my Smith and Wesson Combat 66 grips made from Black Canvas Micarta. I knew he would take this project on with enthusiasm and apply his perfectionist work ethic to the final product.

The Fallkniven Knife blank came to me almost fully finished. The blade was fully polished and sharpened but the handle was rough and required smoothing out. Greg took care of this with a slack belt sander and some TLC. For those people wanting a Para cord-wrapped blade, the Fallkniven F1 polishes up nicely. The tang holes are also placed nicely for cord wrapping.

The handle material I chose for this knife is black linen micarta. I purchased a sheet of 5”x12”x1/4”. Unfinished, it resembles woodland camouflage which is just an awesome looking handle material. This is especially true for a no-frills practical survival/bushcraft knife like the F1. The hidden bolts are ¼” 416 stainless steel and the lanyard tubing is ¼” 416 as well. JB Weld is the epoxy of choice. Handle parts were purchased from knifekits.com for under $25 shipped. I can’t recommend this company highly enough.

Greg assembled all of the materials but did so in his own fashion. Drawing from his experience as a revolver/pistol grip maker, Greg fit the grips and did most of the final finishing prior to epoxying them to the tang. Greg’s work is second to none. His grips are all done by hand and could pass for CAD machined. They are 100% symmetrical and fit to the handle with no gaps or flaws. I’d certainly employ his services again.

The finished product is a Fallkniven F1 similar to the F1GM. The main difference is the lack of a secondary press-fit guard. The blade measures 3.9” from tip to handle slabs (just like the base F1) and it is legal to carry in 4” or under blade regulated states. There is a slight palm swell between the hidden bolts and flaring toward the butt and ricasso. The handle contours are very similar to the F1GM and the linen micarta has beautiful lines when profiled like this. Overall, it is a great handling knife. One of the best aspects of this knife is the fact it rides nicely in the factory kydex sheath. It fits nicer than my standard F1.

If you are interested in having a set of grips done, I’d recommend contacting Greg. He can be reached through the gunshop and will be setting up his own website soon. He can make 1911 or revolver grips out of almost any material and can match you micarta knife handle to your sidearm’s. Give him some consideration next time you want a semi-custom knife made to your liking. As he says all the time, “Its what I do” and he is damn good at it!

THANKS BROTHA!

PS, I can't post pictures but will certainly E-mail them to someone who could help me out. my E-mail is estela_usa@sbcglobal.net

Shoot the pics to me if you want, I'd love to see it and can post the pics here.

tKnife,

What is your E-mail. I have the pics attached to an E-mail I sent to myself. I can quickly forward them to you to post. By the way, I appreciate your help in doing this!

I've been wondering if you can have micarta made into revolver grips? Don't know if they come that thick.:o

I've got pics of my Combat 66 grips too. Greg made them. He epoxied the micarta together and they have been holding strong with full house .357 loads. No way they are coming loose, not even a wiggle!

I've made some sheaths for some similar F-1's with handles from Shane Sibert. Very nice stuff.

Here are the pics. the handle looks great, I really like Micarta and prefer it to the rubber type handle.

WOW...thats awesome!!!

Thanks for all the comments and compliments. I've received a few E-mails about contacting Greg. The best way to reach him is to E-mail him, his E-mail is ghquickdraw25@comcast.net

If he can't be reached there, he can be reached through the gunshop. That website is www.jojosgunworks.com

The 1911 grips he makes are awesome! Whether they are made from synthetic or natural materials, they all are works of art. He has a set of carbon fiber grips that look like the carbon fiber microtech uses. It is almost 3D and the color looks like it changes as the knife is shifted in and out of the light. Truly consider him if you want a nice looking set of handles for a pistol/revolver or a knife.

Thats fantastic. I think I may just cut the rubber off mine now. LOL. Dagnabbit. Don't overload me now.

Hollowdweller,

I don't really like using my knives for makeshift tools with the purpose of anything else other than knifecraft. I can beat on my synthetic handled F1 and I know it will take it. I can beat on the micarta version and know it might require a bit of sanding. I can also, find a rock or a piece of hardwood and do the same without the risk of damaging a knife or myself in the process. If I was in a pinch and my life depended on it, I'd use my knife. If I'm just out and about, I'll find a tool that grows on trees and can be found all over the ground.
