Is it possible and if so how would one go about replacing the steel in a custom firesteel handle?

I don't own one myself so I have no idea if they are glued or just a friction fit.

I would guess they are glued in with most handmade models.

Probably less effort to make a fresh one.

I've superglued the one's I've made. If the handle is G10, you could try soaking it in acetone to release the adhesive. Probably not worth the effort, though.

Really strong vice put some strong cordage through the lanyard (if it has it) put some strong solvents* on the place where the steel meets the handle (acetone, alcohol, etc) put the steel piece in the vice pull back hard till it comes out.
Just get a new one in other terms.

Choco, just to point out, acetone, alcohol, etc are all solvents, not acids. They occasionally can have the same end result, but are chemically entirely unrelated.

That being said, if the ferro-rod is well epoxied in place, fat bloody chance of getting the handle off in one piece. Just buy a new one.

ah, okay, thanks. Good to know. I'll save the customs for bushcraft and barbecues and get a cheapie to goof around in the yard with.

Thanks!
