Custom Folder in ZDP-189.

The part of knife collecting I love as much as actually using the knife, is researching the next one. I have since decided on a Branton Raider, and now would like to keep the research going by looking for a custom folder in ZDP-189.

In my understanding it is not the steel that is hard to come by, but the heat treat is some guarded secret that only a handful of American makers know.

I have seen William Henry knives, but they are too fancy for my liking and the ones that I do like are too small. (Unless someone knows of a model with a 3.5" - 4" blade)

I am going to keep this in the medium sized folder range like a sebenza or the soon to be ordered Raider.

So, can anyone recommend any custom makers that really excel (and actually have access to) this steel?

Thanks!

Spyderco uses it in a few models.

You can get a knife from Rockstead knives that is YXR7. Pretty incredible knives:thumbup:
Top folder is ZDP189
Bottom is YXR7

ZDP is not often heat-treated outside of Japan. I think some makers have made one or two knives from ZDP, but not that many. You have to look for makers based in Japan if you're really interested in a custom ZDP folder.

Trisak Jeeracheeveekul of yunaknives.com makes excellent knives with a ZDP-189 cutting edge. He also will modify his designs to your specifications.

Here's mine
