I confess that I don't spend as much time on BladeForums as I did in the past, but I have always thought it to be a superb venue for discussion and even disagreement on all matters Custom related. However, I have started to despair over its future.

I sense the cold clammy hand of politically correct moderation, attempting to enforce a politeness filter on forum posts.

I don't like it one bit.

If it is not broken, leave it the heck alone. Those should be the watch words for all supposed moderators, all the time.

Just one man's opinion.

Honestly, I think you're overstating the case. I think you're taking a snapshot in time and generalizing from it.

I don't see a lot of traffic in the "moderator's only" section of the site being generated from C&H Knives. Quite the opposite, in fact.

While the dust-up last week was certainly lamentable, I personally don't see it as something to draw general conclusions from. YMMV and I certainly respect your right to your point of view.

I will agree with you that keeping moderation within reasonable bounds (and the rules of the site) is always preferable.

There is a reason for that. It is because the Custom forum requires almost ZERO moderation.

The issues/problems usually seem to arise when a particular moderator chooses to inject himself into the discussion.

Respectfully, my thought is that all you are accomplishing here by posting this at this juncture is fanning embers.

The original thread was closed (for good reason). Some important points were made and are still being considered / acted upon. Some of us made a good faith effort to keep that discussion on target, ultimately to little avail. Nothing new is being proffered.

As for the forum in question, I am well familiar with it and I agree (in general) that it has not been very problematic.

Facts are stubborn things.

Peter, I don't want to argue with you, and facts are something I appreciate and know how to work with.

But in the current instance it's not as simple as claiming to have "facts" on your side. I say this because there are many members on the forum (perhaps not as loud and vociferous as some, and I am not referring to you) that take a counter view. Apparently, (and I say this because I am not the recipient of the emails and PM's) many of them feel that the C&H Forum has been hijacked by a certain group and have demanded to know not only why they have been allowed to do so, but why some of their behavior has been tolerated.

I am not going to debate that particular issue with you as it's been done to death now. I bring it up simply to illustrate that no particular side has a monopoly on the facts. And true moderation (in C&H Knives or any forum on this site) requires a calm and dispassionate weighing of those facts, even the ones that we don't necessarily care for.

Edited To Add:

This thread has been closed (apparently) by the OP.

We're discussing potential moderators in the Back End. Rest assured, just like everywhere else on the site, moderation is still considered best done in minimal doses.
