I couldn't find a replacement sheath for this knife. I was looking for someone who sells the original leather sheath with the metal protector, but came up empty. So, I made my own. This is not just a thread to show off my new sheath. What are your opinions on the Pilot Survival knife? This is my second one and like to use them for the minor chores in the bush. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions about this knife, mostly negative, but mine have never done me wrong. What are your thoughts?

I like mine. I did thin out the edge a little and cut the top of the guard off. The only reason that I haven't been carrying it is because I need a new sheath too. To me it's about the perfect size and mine sharpens quickly and easily to razor sharp. The sharpen clip is probably not too good for batoning. I like the sheath. I going to try and make one when I have some extra time.

Nice job!

I like the Pilot Knife myself...

It's a little thick for cutting but still cuts, a little short for batoning but still batons.

It also fits in my fanny pack! :D

You did a really nice job on that sheath. As such, I am reluctant to trash the knife you made it for. That said, I carried one of those knives for a dozen years as a Naval Aviator and never had a bit of confidence in it. Not a bad crowbar - but a truly crappy cutting tool. I own hundreds of knives now and my pilot "knife" would be literally the last one I would use for any purpose except as a paperweight.

Thanks for all the comments. I did decide to get a spec ops sheath for it. It will be a x-mas gift from my wife.

I have an Ontario version with the metal-backed sheath. I got it almost 20 years ago, and could never get any sort of reasonable edge on it. I've gotten more use out of the hammerhead butt than from the blade.

Anyone want to trade me something cheap for it? Like maybe a Mora, Swedish messkit, etc.?

Hey man your little project gave me an idea. What I did was I took my stock ka-bar sheath ( its my main woods knife, but with that steadfast coming that may change! I took a standard GI magazine pouch and slid it onto the sheath. Then I cord-wrapped it so that it wouldnt fall off. Next I took my ka-bar TDI and cordwrapped that onto the sheath then duct-tapped it on over the cord. So now on my sheath I have a pack for fire starting and an extra knife!

great knives. I thinned my edge as on a pukko. have used it extensively and hard its still in good shape.I also cut off top guard and reduced lower guard.

What's a "standard GI magazine pouch"? 30 cal, 45 cal, M14, M16, 1st aid/compass???

I like my Camillus made USAF survival knife, though I did seriously reprofile the edge.

Here's a leather replacement sheath I made a while back. I replaced the original carborundum hone with an EZE-Lap diamond hone.

Thanks, I make all of my own leather sheaths, usually for older knives I have where the sheath is inadequate, worn out, or missing, but sometimes for a knife that I make. They tend to follow the same style which I have found works well in the field. I don't make the pouch style sheaths that some seem to prefer because my most common leather material is really thick, 1.5" wide leather strap.

Making a sheath for a curved blade is the trickiest, like this sheath here. These curved Western #39 pattern skinners are great knives, but the original factory sheath really sucked.

On the USAF survival knife, I've found that re-profiling it really helps out in the performance of the knife in the field, as it brings it backs to it's Marbles roots. I also taped up the knife with masking tape and put several layers of black automotive spray paint on the steel handguard to protect it. The paint also seals the spot in the handguard where the blade tang passes through it, preventing moisture, blood, etc, from getting in there.

I guess nobody knows what a "standard GI magazine pouch" is.
A "saw" pouch is way too big to put on a sheath. You'd be wearing a pouch with a knife stuck to it.
