Custom Ganzaa questions (I'm a noob, but these are not noob questions)

While I know how Ganzaa's work, I have two questions about the current custom Ganzaa that I'd like some input on from fellow hogs.

1. "Mixed" handle style. It seems that overwhelmingly, the handle style in this custom ganzaa is to have a mix of materials and colours. Personally I much prefer a single (although somewhat different or exotic material) handle style, similar to the bottom knife in the following pic, and frankly I think the other styles in the pic bring to mind Bill Cosby's sweaters from the 80's. Would anyone else prefer to see simpler handles on these customs?

2. Custom shop backlog. While it's great to see all these unique custom shop creations being sold in a ganzaa, I wonder what the impact is on custom shop lead times? I know I personally declined waiting for a custom based on the long lead times involved, and to be perfectly honest it bugs me a bit that these 30+ customs have been made for no one in particular, while people who would love a custom Busse with specific requirements in mind are forced to wait for who knows how much longer to get their dream blades.

What say you Busse fanatics, would you prefer to be able to get your own customs faster, or do you prefer to see regular sales of custom shop creations open to anyone and everyone?

Oh.

Snap!

That's a bit harsh. I can (sorta) see where you are coming from, but dang.
These new customs may not be for everyone, but there's no arguing with the craftsmanship. And at least they're different. Have you been to Blade? There are acres and acres of almost identical-looking knives. But hardly anything that looks like the knives you've posted above. You've gotta give it up to Jerry and Garth for wanting to mix it up a bit. Who can blame a guy if he doesn't want to slap on identical, plain micarta slabs on the same blade blanks every day.

If it was up to the general public, Busse would still be cranking out SHBMs, and people would still be snapping them up as fast as they could be made.

Viva la difference!

LOL yeah I am not into all of that "handle mixing" either, G-Rex is okay but splitting the handle in three is not for me. :barf: Too much going on.

I am a CG man through and through but I do like to see what these custom guys get up to. Would I like to see some of these custom blades with CG or more restrained handles, the answer is yes. The bottom one in the above pic is certainly to my liking but I know it will be out of my price league.

I think however that it is good to go a bit wild with the handles as it brings a few more collectors to the Busse table and shows how much you can push it. No one is ever interested in the 3rd fastest car they all want the fastest, I think the same is true for custom knives.

I have a question though, what is the difference between a Nuclear and a Custom?

I always thought that Mr Cosby had some wicked style going on:thumbup:;)...but, would I buy his style?....Nope....But, I like the diversity and the offerings which Busse offers....Is this Ganza for me?...probably not.....I'm waiting for the Combatgradeagaaaaanzaaaa :D

Now, some puddin' pop colors would be schweet!

Nuke refers to the serrations on the spine of the blade. Nuclear just references the "mythical" toughness of Busse knives.

I want to see somebody with the cash and the cajones beat the bejeepers out of one of these purdy blades. I'd do it myself, but I'm busted at the moment. If somebody happens to pick up the third knife down in the pic above, and their too busy to give it a workout, I'd be happy to beat on it for them! (I'm a giver)

I try to stick with micarta only on my Busse's, do have a few with G-10.

Many only buy Busse and will like all types though.

On your second question, I do like Ganza style for CS or CG's:thumbup:

I say those are legit questions. I am not in the boat to buy any of there, but I prefer solid handles over mixed. As for lead times on customs, I would think that customs made to order should be made prior to anything going in a ganzaa, but I don't know how that works

Then send it on over to me next :) My HOA will love you for it!!

LMAO !!!!!!!!!!:barf::barf::barf::barf:

I see where you are coming from but I would still like to see one in person..

I for my own taste prefer one solid fancy handle material for those custom, two at the most,i think those handle with 3 different material look too busy, but again i'm sure
some like them.

I think they're beautiful, but I have my safe queen, so one of these would be lost on me. They are nice, though. The one on the bottom would go great with my other CS SFNO.

...snip...

1. "Mixed" handle style...
I personally like this and hope that Garth & crew continue to try new handle designs & styles. Last year, the new "thing" was the G-rex bolster handles, this year it's this. Creativity & willing to try new designs is what has me interested in what they will come up with next. You don't like Busse's with this handle style? Don't buy 'em. That's cool... But to compare them to Bill Cosby's sweater collection seems a little harsh to me.

2. Custom shop backlog...
Again, I like the Ganzaaa events and seeing what comes from the Shop for each one. Maybe it's me, but I seem to find quite a few knives in each that I like & want. You think the Busse Custom Shop has a backlog? Try ordering from Randall, or ordering an XM-18 from Rick Hinderer, who had to close the list due to overwhelming popularity and a serious backlog he wants to catch up on, or Scott Cook, who also closed the list on his Lochsa folder for the same reasons, or any number of other custom knife makers who make sweet knives, but have a year or longer order backlog. Artistic knife grinding & creating talent doesn't just 'grow on trees'.

I say to the Busse crew, "keep on doing what you're doing". I prefer to see regular sales of custom shop creations open to anyone and everyone.

JMHO, YMMV

I was LMAO also, but was afraid to admit it last night. Hogs I'm sorry, but Man that Cosby sweater is just to funny:D:D:D

I did see them in person J

As for the effect on the backlog... it is up to the knife maker what knife he or she makes when- within the constraint of the name at the top fo the list gets priority over the one beneath it, and so on. In other words, if a knife maker wants to make knives for shows, or to sell here on the forum, that is his right. Estimated wait list times should reflect this. If you get on a wait list, you should understand that most makers are not just grinding through (pun intended) their backlog list of custom orders. Busse is no different.

I looked forward to the customganzaa coming up. I think the three-piece handles look great especially one of the mean street variants! Now it's been a couple days and they have really grown on me...they are fresh and fun! I think the knives in this ganzaa are hardly slowing down the customshop. They have a huge productive capacity if we were really privy, but the military aspect keeps a lid on the doings of the shop. Plus its an added benefit and great for morale for the custom shop workers as "a change is as good as a rest". In a world where employees are just so much "manhours" and objectified, it's nice to see a company and a guy like Jerry setting this up: something for the workers and the fans of Busse combat knives company. I really enjoyed all the eyecandy. I thought it was great to have a chance to study the pictures. I have never seen a Busse in person, much less picked one up before. The whole thing was a great deal, I am happy about it.:D And I just had a thought...the new stuff makes you enjoy the tried and true even more. It makes the all osage orange handled Mean Street look even cooler and more desirable to own and use. Wierd..but it works on both levels!

I think I understand what you are saying, but since you don't have an order in for a custom blade I don't really see your complaint.

I for one think it is awesome that they are offering these interesting blades to us. I tried to get one, but didn't score. *shrug* there's always next time.

Please don't take this as an insult, but I truly am of the opinion that some people like to complain. I'm not saying that you are one of those people, but your post comes awful close.

Here's hoping for another 'ganza in the very near future, custom shop lead times be damned!
