Hello,
I am still looking for suggestions for a maker who makes a simple (not embellished) custom knife and fork set, something with a leather case that a gentleman might take out of his suit pocket and use at a fine restaurant.

I have misplaced my old copy of Knives 19?? (whatever year it was) that had a special section devoted to this, but that was many years ago anyway...

A search of the group yielded nothing... any ideas?

Durvyn Howard elegant dinner set; knife and fork with front lockback; engraved by Harvey McBurnette; blades are 3 1/4" hand rubbed SS; domed pins; fileworked liners; marked number 1; magnificent mother of pearl handles from back when MOP was plentiful; this set was made about 1981.

I never heard of such a thing:) I am not gentlemanly enough for a nice set like that yet. VERY NICE!!:)

Sets of that type were frequently carried by travellers who wanted to avoid using the wooden spoons provided by coaching inns in Europe in the 17th and 18th Centuries. They were produced in large numbers in London and Sheffield and especially in Germany and France in varying degrees of sophistication. Later came the folding silver or (more rarely) gold fruit knives and forks from Birmingham, Sheffield and London.

I think it would be very nice to see the tradition revived. I know a lot of discerning people carry knives which are brandished at steaks but why not a fine set like the one Chuck found? I know Case make their Hobo knife but this is the Custom Forum :)

So, who else makes these fine implements now?

Roger
