Hi, Im thinking of getting a griptilian (maybe custom) I wanted to know if the colors in the custom scales are molded all the way through or are they just coated on the surface? Im also wondering about cuscadi and others quality and cost effectiveness compared to the factory handle. And do aftermarket scales with a back spacer make the knife feel alot more solid? Also since Im not a knife fanatic is the base priced steel good enough or should I upgrade) if for no other reason the resale)? Also what is the sheepsclaw blade best used for? thanks for replying

I have a customized mini Grip from the BM site and a mini Grip with Cuscadi G10 scales, (both white-handled with some black components).
- The color on the BM customized scales is molded all the way through; (best as I can tell.)
- My Cuscadi-scaled mini Grip definitely feels more solid than the other, which makes sense since we're basically comparing solid G10 to hollow plastic. However, the Benchmade-customized mini Grip is way more ergonomic than the flat, polished slabs of G10 I ordered from Cuscadi. But Cuscadi offers a variety of materials and can probably also mimic the ergonomic "bulbous" shape of the stock Griptilian. Whether Cuscadi scales are worth the price is up to you to decide. They do good work, but it doesn't come cheap.
- The base-priced steel (154CM) is good enough to satisfy the needs of 90-95%+ of people, in my opinion.

The sheepsfoot blade (on thr 550 full size and 555 mini-grip) is great for EDC, its actually not your traditional sheepsfoot, BM calls it a "moddified sheeps foot" because it does come to a tip (a true sheepsfoot doesn't have a tip). Its my personal favorite grip blade (even over the Ritter).

About the steel, the 154CM steel is a superb steel, its about on par, if not a little better, in edge retention than VG-10 and its still plenty easy to sharpen. For regular users 154CM does everything you'll ask of it and you absolutely will never miss the D2 or S30v upgrade.

I carry a 550HG as my working knife in 154CM. The colour is molded all the way through. I cannot comment on aftermarket scales. The factory ones have stood up extremely well over the past two years of hard use. Very ergonomic for hard cutting, do not absorb grease and oil, easy to clean and provide plenty of traction. When I first received the knife, the scales felt cheap and flimsy but as time progressed they grew on me. They keep the knife ergonomic while keeping the weight down. I do not have any problems with the knife flexing.

I really like 154CM for my daily user. Though it doesn't hold an edge as long as the more exotic steels on my other knives, it's ease of sharpening more than outweighs this drawback. I am constantly cutting abrasive material, straps, scraping corrosion etc. Any steel by the end of the day will be in need of a sharpening. 154CM sharpens up extremely easily even on my Norton india stones. I absolutely love the blade shape. The hollow grind keeps the edge nice and thin for precise cutting while the tip remains nice and strong in the case it gets dropped on the concrete, nicks some steel, etc.

The axis lock opens quickly and smoothly and closes just as fast. It is an excellent working blade.

The color should be all the way through.

I have a mini-grip with cpm-m4 steel, love the blade and I love the axis lock... I do wish the handle wasnt as "bulbous" like Jesse said above... with that said I have also been considering custom scales, but they arent cheap!

I really wish BM would release a sprint run of grips with a G10 or Micarta handles...

So the same basic Griptilian with a custom colored handle is going to be about twice the cost of a black Griptilian Is that about how you guys see it?

in that ballpark, yes. But i have never heard of anyone disliking their custom grip! Whenever I have gotten the itch to order some custom Ti scales....i just take that cash and buy a different knife haha...

My ideal (purely on looks) blade would be the mini ritter with the S30V and some stonewashed Ti grips.... MMMMMMM :)

Yep they are more expensive. I had two small mini grips made for me and my cousin in S30V and while expensive I have been happy with the purchase.

Yes. About double. The cuscadi will be about triple. If you are talking full size grip - then you will definitely notice the cuscadi's feel more solid. On the mini-grip - maybe not so much.
The other common option for custom scales is wilkins out of Germany. I have 4 cuscadis and 0 Wilkins - but hope to fix that soon.
I would prefer to spend the money on better material and color, rather than just on better color. The steel is great - no need to upgrade.
