i think the title to the thread says it all. i am looking for a source of G10 or Micarta scales for a Kabar BK9. i have seen the tan Micarta ones that are on ebay, but i have been looking for a pair of OD green or orange. i'm looking to keep them rather cheap, >$60. i don't want to spend more on the scales than the knife...

KA-BAR sells micarta through their dealers. Try Tomars Kabars. Then dye with RIT... it's quite easy.

The knifemaker's gadget exchange has scales on occasion. You could also put a post in the "services wanted" section as well. Good luck!

i'll be moving this over to Beckerlandia so more Becker people see it...

there are sources...

Have you considered making them yourself? You could buy some orange micarta or G10 (thickest it usually comes is 3/8", FYI), and maybe some liners. You could do OD green with orange liners, for instance.

Saint Cutlery made me some OD green micarta. They're great scales and reasonably priced. They are very thick, though. If you're looking to replicate the feel of the factory scales, the factory micarta is a better choice, although as previously mentioned, you'll have to dye them.

I've got an order for Marathonman to make me some of his flat cocobolo scales for my BK-5. They're going to look great.

I like your idea, Falcon. I've been thinking about getting some G-10 and grinding my own scales for the BK-7 I haven't got yet. There are how-to vids on Youtube I've been watching to see how to do it. The process looks like a lot of work, but this Becker hobby is making me a handier kind of guy. I'm much more willing to do stuff myself these days. It's a good thing. My grandpa could build or modify anything, and I always envied him that ability. Turns out, if you want to be like that yourself, all you have to do is be willing to learn and try for yourself.

Maybe I'll try my hand at making some wood scales as well.

It's not as much work as you'd think, especially if you have a belt sander and a drill press. I can do a set of handle scales these days in a few hours. Bocote is really good stuff, by the way. I'm really liking it.

I have a drill press in storage, but I need a belt sander in the worst way.

I saw some bocote scales a while back for an Esee that had been grooved by Bryfry, I think. The weird grain of the wood looks crazy awesome when it's been grooved. I can't remember where I saw them.

Ahh, here we go. Not an Esee, but an RTAK II.

I love how that bocote looks. Love it.

Nick.

I am tooling up to do a run of fancy wood and micarta/G-10 grip sets in the next two weeks. They will be as close to the factory grips as I can make them and use the factory hardware. I have some Orange G-10 as well as some Spruce green/black Canvas Micarta. The Micarta/G-10 sets should run less than $50 shipped. Send me an Private message and I will help you any way I can.
