Custom Handle Scales

What would be a good knife to make handle scales for for the first time. All of the knives I currently have seem difficult so I was thinking about buying something cheap with a simple handle design like a skyline or a tenacious

I've always wanted to try my hand at making handle scales (fixed blades), particularly on a Buck Kaala. They've been discontinued though.

For folders, you can't go wrong with your original choices. Unassisted and simple designs with screwed construction like those will work. Maybe also a Kershaw JYD2.
