Custom hatchet in 3V: where should I look?

I came across the new custom hatchets of Jon Graham recently and decided I need a solid hatchet in 3V, but customized. Unfortunately, it looks like Mr. Graham is not taking any more special orders for the time being :.(

Would anyone have any recommendations with regards to finding a knowledgeable, practiced, experienced custom axe/hatchet maker who would be willing to construct a highly customized hatchet in 3V or another high-end steel? Price range I'm thinking up to 1,500$ (Is that realistic?)

At that price you'll be able to do a lot.

When you say "high-end steel" what exactly do you mean? In W2 or 52100 I can think of a couple guys who do outstanding work.

Send me a mail. I got my grail recently from this guy who does a mean-looking 3v hawk.

Thank you for your reply :) I should have elaborated a little more; by high-end steel (in the case of a hatchet) I'm thinking of factors such as shock absorption, strength, and durability (as well as a high toughness to weight ratio) 3V seems very attractive, but 52100 is also a good steel. Might I ask who you are thinking of? *Wonders aloud* I wonder if anyone would make me one out of S-7? (*mouth waters*)

Have you looked at Dan Winkler's offerings on the Winkler Knives 2 website? He has lots of choices, uses S7 steel on some models. He gave me the option of 3 different steels to choose from when I ordered my Sayoc. It's worth asking him if he could use the steel of your choice, and he can modify his designs. He considers each one a custom due to the amount of hands on work each one requires. You should at least look at what he has to offer.

I want a few things (still deciding on a few things mind you...) I was thinking glass-breaker w/lanyard hole, a serious pick (fireman's axe style, obviously a fair bit smaller :P) Also a small pry-bar on the head as well as a sharpened underside for pull-cutting. (The last two features I liked on the Strider BS Hatchet).

I'm unsure of what handle material would be best (to cover the steel handle)... I must see if anyone is able to use FR-G11

Can I ask what the 3 choices were? I figure two are S7 and 5160, but was the third H13?

Thank you

Exactly correct, CollinAshmore. Dan was had been testing H13 and decided to use it, so he gave me the option. I chose 5160, it's the better choice for the Sayoc, of the three. I wanted better edge retention since it's not a breacher.
