Hey guys.

I'm getting my first HI Khukuri this week (it's actually the antler-handled M43 from the 3/24 Deals). I'm really excited and I'm sure there will be more!!

I've tried doing several searches on custom sheath options (i.e. leather, kydex, etc). for people that would prefer a flatter fit on how they carry their khukuri. Is there anyone on this forum that makes them? If so, does anyone have any examples?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

George

There are several very good, older threads on this, George.
Forumites have done leather, all wood, and kydex, and variations of the three.
Did you look in the Cantina as well? I recall a couple about a month ago.

I have made a few of leather, and one of wood. I have also done a rework of my original HI scabbard with a new frog that was very slim and comfortable to carry. Do an advanced search for my username. If you e-mail me I'll send you some pics.

Well, this isn't a custom idea for a sheath, but it is my "poor-man" option for a good hiking sheath.

I bought a couple sheaths sold for the cheapie Cold Steel khukri. For about 7 dollars you get a codura sheath w/belt loop that fits pretty much any H.I. khukri w/a 11" blade- that translates as your pretty standard 14-17" OAL khukri (and I use even larger and smaller khuks in that sheath). My 14" BDC, 15" Sirupate, and 16" WWII ride great in it and I don't have to lug around the heavy H.I. sheath.

But it ain't nothin' elaborate, just cheap and light and flat. YMMV:thumbup:

Cool tip. Where did you get them?

Dan made me a kydex sheath for my 15" Ganga. One note: Unless every ounce counts the kydex sheath will not save you a lot of weight over the standard sheath, and really, I think that the standard sheath is better except for backpacking.

First the standard sheath is somewhat loose and sets out from your body. So for trail clearing it is way easier to pull the khuk out of the wood sheath and put it back in where with a kydex sheath it is slower and being so close to your body you have to give more care putting it back in.

You can take the karda and chakma pockets and knives out and save more weight.

Thanks guys. All very good recommendations that I'll have to think about (especially hollowdweller's previous post).

For some reason, when I try to do a search on keywords like "custom sheaths" or "leather sheaths" or "kydex sheaths" I always get a "Page cannot be displayed" error. That's the reason why I posted this thread in the first place.

If anyone is kind enough to post a link to these older relevant threads, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks and I apologize for taking up bandwidth. I'm not big on posting!

aproy1101, I purchased my Cold Steel sheaths at www.tradingpostsupply.com ... but I think I bought out the last one for now (Robert, the owner there, says he'll get more). The Cold Steel Panga or Bolo Machete sheath might work too, but I've never tried it.

Just don't buy Cold Steel's "Gurhka Kukri" sheath, that's $38! You want the kukri sheath that sells for $6.90.

Actually, I think you can find the sheath lots of other places too- check Froogle (the Google shopping tab). Cold Steel sheaths are pretty good, and they works for lots of other large blades.

Don't apologize George. Your posts are welcome. I agree with HD. The leather sheaths I made will most likely be my last. They use up a LOT of leather and I am very iffey about resheathing with them. I like my wooden one the best. Its thin and the knife is easy to unsheath and resheath. Also there are brass pins that prevent the edge from protruding from the scabbard. The one I am carrying around with me all the time now is an ajusted original scabbard. I removed the rings and made a new frog. Nice and thin. I like it a lot.
