I know many may think i am crazy - but here it goes:
I am a lifelong buck carryer. My favorite model is the 532. I just lost it on a trip to NY (turns out there was a hole in my back pocket).

Anyway, I bought a yellowhorse 532. Its a beautiful knife that i intended on carrying. I know its a lot of money for a carry blade, but i dont mind. I believe they are meant to be used.

So the blade is a mirror polish with no indication of what type of metal. My fear, not ever having a custom, is that the mirror blade on this 532 is for show only. I use my knives every day for work and play and dont want to carry something that will not hold up. I just dont know a thing about this blade.

Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance for any information or suggestions!

hi delrio the yellowhorse is a poor choice for daily carry but lucky for you i have the standard 532 with bg42 blade that i can swap you and it will stand up much better:p :D
seroiusly though go ahead and use it i am sure it wont let you down:thumbup:

no sorry i dont offhand but i will go look at mine and see if they are marked
check and see what the year date stamp on yours is that will probably help as well

...Welcome to the forum delrio...You've mentioned a knife that's been a serious favorite of mine as well. I too carry a 532 in my EDC rotation. I'd love to see them make a come-back in the Buck line up. That knife you bought has steel that you can use. Having a "mirror finish" doesn't change the steel used. Depending on what year the blade was made and when the Yellowhorse's "customized" it, it could be 425M, 420HC or any of the more exotic steels that Buck has used for the 532. Some call the 420HC a poor steel but believe me, after Paul B is done with it it's a fine steel to use day in and day out. Ask most anyone in the forum about 420HC...you'll get great reviews. If you're determined to use a Yellowhorse 532 as a "user" feel confident that it will perform just the way you want it to...mirror finish or not...By the way...that date code tells me it's more than likely 420HC...Nice user steel IMHO...

ok i have one the same as that (mirror polished) no indication of steel but i have another that looks the same and the coa says 420hc and another marked bg42 and one with a plain blade that isnt marked either so i was thinking 425 but it could be 420

...Buckman and delrio...425M til 1994 then 420 HC after that...If BG-42 was used it was marked as BG-42...an anvil alone with mirror finish would be 420HC...Still fine steel ...

...delrio, I have a 420HC user and a year 2000 BG-42 that's also a user. Both are super performers. I love 'em both. Don't worry if it's 420HC or BG-42...both steels are great to work with...The design of that knife lends itself to being used and appreciated...:)

thanks for the info darryl so it looks like i have them in all three steels
do you know if the 531 and 535 were the same as in 425 pre 94 and 420 after ?

...Buckman...The 531's are identical to the 532's as far as steels and dates of steel usage are concerned...The 531 does predate the 532 however...I have a few 531's as well but I prefer the 532's size and design as the user knife over the 531. I do also use the 531 as a user though...Both are great knives...
