Okay, first off I'd like to really, seriously, sincerely apologize for reposting this. I understand that it's not something a forum user is supposed to do, but I feel that I've got a fairly good reason for doing so (if I didn't, I would do this at all). You see, I'd just finished designing a knife for myself, and in my excitement I joined the forum so I could get some input (as I say in the post, I've been browsing for a while now; this is where I got most of my info for my knife). I kind of rushed into posting it and so I ended up putting it in the Gallery, which seemed like the place to put it. However, having had more time to calmly sift through all of the various sections and subsections of this forum, I've found this area (the Custom & Handmade Knives section) and realized that this is probably where I should have put my knife design for the best chance of getting good advice and criticism on it. So here I am, putting it where it should have been all along, since I had no idea that this is where it should have been.
My sincerest apologies to anyone and everyone, because I really don't like doing this at all, but I'd really like some response and input regarding my design. After reading so much from knowledgeable people in order to create it, I'd like to present it to those same people for review.
Thank you so much for putting up with my noobness. Here's the original post, in all its new-member-y glory.
Hello, I'm a new forum member, but I've been browsing the forums for a while, and I really enjoy learning all I can about knives. I've been doing a lot of research on a custom knife of my own design, and I think I've come up with a winner here. This is a hand-drawn diagram of the knife, and I'd like any input you have regarding my work.
The blade will be S90V steel, with titanium handle (frame lock, if it's not apparent). The blade will have a narrow convex grind. The larger circle on one side is both an anchor for the pivot and a lockbar stabilizer. This drawing is 1:1 scale, and each square on the graph paper is 1/4 inch. Total sharpened length of 3 inches, the max legal folder where I live (West Michigan).
I've got a question or two as well.
1. Who could I find to make this knife who is both nearby and able to work with these materials?
2. I know that this is a matter of opinion, but what level of polish should I put on the edge? More toothy, or more smooth? I've done some research, but I can't really decide.
Thank you so much for all responses, and if this post is in the wrong place please move it. As I said, I'm new.
Edit: This knife will probably be used for cutting paper, plastic, cardboard, and maybe some light woodwork (just whittling and woodshaving, no chopping or batonning). I'm leaning towards a more polished edge, but I worry that it'd have performance issues cutting harder plastics and that stupid bubble/blister packaging.
Any knife users and experts, or just more learned folks than I: any input of any kind is greatly appreciated, as I am new and just learning many things.
By the way, this knife is destined to be an EDC. I know it's a bit big, but I have big pockets.
