So I have some very good friends from Jerome AZ that own a high end furniture company called Western Heritage. They make heirloom quality furniture from 100% reclaimed barnwood. Well they know that I like knives so they made me these shadow box tables that I thought I would share. Each has tons of rustic character and are FINELY crafted and designed, with locking lined drawers and high end hardware. I just had them delivered last night so I just threw a few knives in there for a photo or two. I think it is going to be a very creative way to safely display a knife collection inside a completley custom piece of furniture.

Well,

Blake, I love the idea, and have seen some work done in a similar vein by other companies.

I personally think that reclaimed barnwood is an excellent choice if you are collecting knives that are rustic by nature, ie maybe Raymond Richard, Joe Szilask,i Daniel Winkler, J.A. Lonewolf and Son, or WildGoo, to name a few.....for a more rounded and refined collection, IMO, highly figured exhibition grade woods in something like ipe, rosewood or maple might be more of a total package.

Either way, it is a great idea, and if it makes you happy, that is the bottom line.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I take a little different approach, but like them as well.
Actually, very nice.
Steven, you make a good point. Should you match the display case to the knives
it will house or should the case match your room/house decor?

Blake, how are the knives loaded and held in place? I can't really tell by the photos.

Congrats on such a fine display Blake. I have always been a fan of barnwood :)

Use of those woods would significantly raise the cost of the piece, but I agree that they would be a good choice for a diverse collection. It is important to consider how this display fits with the other furnishing of the home as well.

Blake I think it is an excellent idea and really like it. Choices of wood is always a good idea and everyone has different taste. I have alot of mounts in my house so space is getting to be a premium. I have a little different approach where i use custom shadow boxes on antique furniture and large glass and wood curio cabinets. Here is an example of a shadow box by my desk I end up switching knives ar ound alot

Wow Joe if I had to pick 5 knives that I'd want to own that would def be the top 5 right there in your case. I've got one of them so just gotta work on getting the rest :p

Great concept and beautifully executed. LOVE the look of the old barnwood. What a terrific way to be able to enjoy your collection.

I think that USUALLY tastes in knives and decor run in a similar vein. If not, then certainly match the case to the decor. Let the knives speak for themselves. Since, well they can!

I love the character of the wood. Those are fine pieces indeed.

I understand the point about matching the style of furniture and knives, but I think it's a little bit over-thought. Putting togethers things that actually do not match (but hopefully contrast harmoniously) can actually be more elegant. Even if it doesn't, this is how interiors develop character. The key thing is to have quality components.

Those look functional and VERY well crafted. I like the shadow box concept a lot.

I also like fine woods like the cocobolo cases Tomway makes as well as the oak ones i've seen by J.W Winchester & Co.

Great use of the barnboard.

I love these myself. I use a lot of weathered oak barnwood for knife and hawk handles, so I guess I have a soft spot for the material!
