I didn't know where to post so I'll post here. I'm am currently serving here in San Diego and I have a fellow Navy Chief deploying to Afghanistan at the end of the month. Our mess here has decided that we would like to present a custom knife to him prior to deploying. I'm curious if there is a custom maker or fellow board member out there that has anything available for him. It doesn't have to be anything big or too nice. Looking for something in the 4-6 inch range and that could hold up to some abuse and strap onto his webbing. Our mess will be coming together to pay for this but we're not looking pay too much. Hope I'm not asking for too much. Thank you in advance. I don't have much room in my pm box so if you can post here that would be great.

I'm going to say an ESEE would fit nicely for your specs. It has a lifetime no BS warranty, and comes ready for what you requested. not custom, but functionally beautiful :D EDIT: i believe you can get this one personalized for him too.

If you want a custom I think the sheath would require some upgrade (just my opinion), not sure their are many makers with custom knives and molle ready sheaths, if thats the webbing you are talking about). so this route may be a two part aquisition.

Higly recommend the makers for sale forum here on Bladeforums. Nice prices and amazing workmanship. But a super wide variety as well though, so it may take some time.

I would recommend against anything custom or even expensive for deployed troops. These types of items seem to "grow legs" if you know what I mean. As a military man (currently deployed) i carry a pair of Spydercos on a daily basis, a plain edge Militay and a full serrated Endura. I also have a Cold Steel Recon tanto fixed blade. All of these are nice knives but also replaceable. I agree with a ESSE or Tops. If you give him a custom, ask that he leave it back, and give him a production model to actually take with him.

I'd say ESSE, TOPS, Ranger (I really like these), Becker or something by Kabar. Prices are good on all of them, and they are all quality blades. BTW, these are all carbon steel blades for the most part.

This may be a silly question, but is he going to be spending most of his time on ship or on land? If he's going to be on ship, I'd get something in stainless steel. Maybe something in D2 or maybe an Entrek in 440C. I really like the Entrek's for a stainless knife.
