Custom knife for a steel junkie?

I'm considering a first custom, but I also feel I should have a say in the choice of steel as well, and most custom knife makers seem to prefer CPM154 and use nothing else.

I was interested in something a little more exotic, like Vanax75, though M390 seems like the best I can hope for and even then there doesn't seem to be people working on that particular steel as of late.

Mostly looking for a folder though at this point I'll take anything I can get my hands on:D.

Price range would be...let's just put it under $750:thumbup:.

I don't know about folders but for fixed I'd say Phill Wilson, either way some S90V would probably be my choice. Well maybe some 110V or M4 or 10V or.........

Unfortunately Phil seems to have had a full backlog for the past 2 years, so I don't have much hope for that.

However, I'm wondering if it's enough for a willing knifemaker to do the general fabricating and grinding of an M390 blade, while sending it to Phil for the heat treat, because he seems perfectly willing to reharden blades when I asked, and I assume heat treating is much less time consuming than making a new knife from scratch.

Though I'm considering just waiting for my Benchmade Torrent, sending the blade to him for rehardening, then having it reground to a hollow grind profile:thumbup:. Seems like less trouble.

You can contact Farid. He uses a San Mai steel with an S90V core. I've got an order in with him right now.

M390, S110V or S90V would be the top for Stainless, but they come at a premium price.

Might want to Email Andrew Demko and see what he can do for you.

Here is my personal Phil Wilson Custom in M390 @ 62 HRC, that's .009" behind the edge.
