Custom Knife From VG-10

I tried the question in the Custom Forum, and really did not get much of a response.

Are any custom makers using VG-10 for folders or kitchen knives. I am thinking of my Al Mar SERE, and a 3" "hunting" knife that I use in the kitchen - I really like the properties of the steel, how it sharpens, etc.

Is the lack of use because other steels are more available, simply better for the same dollars, easier to use, or ????

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ed

Actually, I've can't ever remember seeing it offered thru the knifemaker supply companie's catalogs.

It might only be available in rather large lots that are too big for the individual maker to afford. This is only speculation on my part so don't take it as gospel.

VG-10 is a Japanese steel and as I've heard is not sold outside of Japan. All the VG-10 knives are made in Japan, even the custom ones. I've been to several shows with Japanese knifemakers who used VG-10 for their knives.

Here is a custom maker from Japan who uses VG-10:

Jeff is right.
I spoke to a fellow at William Henry Knives and the Japanese will not export this high end steel. You have to send the design and they will make it.

Fallkniven VG-10 knives are made in Japan. They have always acknowledged this but it surely doesn't say so on the product.

Fallkniven is not a manufacturer but rather a distributor with some very good store brand products. This is not unusual. It's not like Cold Steel, SOG, Al Mar, etc... manufactures their own products either.
