Preferably 300 or below...I hadn't really noticed Voorhies until recently, but now that I see the price of some of his beautiful work, I realize that I can get a nice custom for below high end production price. What are some other makers? I'm looking for folders.

Rick Hinderer makes his XM-18 for under $400 and the three inch model is $335 if I am not mistaken. I have one on order but I have only heard good things about these knives. I own his Dauntless Extreme and can verify his work is top notch

Scot Matsuoka has a couple of folders right at $400. I love his designs (KO-like since he trained under KO and I love recurves). His Mejiro is $400 and actually the one I want, but I can't afford it. It has a 2.75" blade which is a near perfect EDC size for me, a Ti framlock handle, and is a flipper. The larger versions are $450, so over your limit.

I'm also interested in knowing what other custom makers are <$400. Not that I can afford them, but good to know should I hit the jackpot some day.

if you are looking for fixed blade hunter types, check geno dennings stuff at cavemanengineering.com, very nice knives at very reasonable prices.

for $400 or less I would look at Hinderer's XM Series (3 inch is $350), anything Obenauf, especially mini and small model 2's and model 3's, Chris Smith also comes to mind. Another option (especially if you're going to use it)is to look for a used custom.

I had a Voorhis (Steve) 4.25 " clip point, Ivory Micarta handle. Had to get rid of it. Beautiful knife, but it just would not hold an edge....it was supposed to be forged 5160. It got dull just gutting and taking out the breast of a turkey ( I might have hit a few soft bones, but still.) I was very dissapointed... Great on the show, a little weak on the go. Don't mean to disrespect anyone, but thought you should know.

haha, that all rhymed...sorry, I'm bored at work...busy as hell, but my brain's getting fried from all the stuff.

a handmade custom with a natural handle (wood, ivory, bone etc.)

David Johansen

Herb Derr

Geno Denning

:)

Bill Vining still offers some in your price range and Thinus Herbst also.

both Kit Carson and Lightfoot make awesome folders for a little over that amount.

Tom Anderson, Dick Atkinson, Jeff Chaffe, Lourens Prinsloo, Pat Nihiser, Aaron Fredrick and Al Dippold. All these makers have at least some models that are under $400.00. I don't think Dick Atkinson makes any knives over $400.00, but I'm not sure.

That's a great suggestion for Onionlovers like AM and myself for that matter.
where do you get those 400$-deals?
thanks,
