My cousin made this knife back in 2009. I pulled it out of my drawer today and decided I wanted to repair the tip and the edge. My initial thought was to bring the tip back by taking material off the top until it formed a point. And for the edge I was going to use the coarse dark stones of my sharpmaker.

Is there a better way of repairing this knife? What are my options?

I would start with a single cut mill bastard file. File the spine down to reform the tip, and establish your edge bevels with the file. Then, use whatever stone/sharpener you have.

Since it looks like the edge needs some repair (can't tell for sure)... if so you may want to do that first. That should at least partially reform the tip, requiring less work on the spine side. After you establish an edge (not fully sharpened), then finish with the tip repair, and sharpen it up!

You'll also find that may be a bit too much for the Sharpmaker stones... even if you do some work with a file as suggested. Might consider getting a bigger sharpening stone... depends on what you're comfortable with.

Nice looking knife.

The dark (brown) stones on your sharpmaker are a medium grit and will take you forever. If you want to use the sharpmaker for the job, you should pickup a pair of the sharpmaker diamond stones.
