hello everyone.....i am new to posting here so forgive me if i put it in the wrong spot......i have some pieces in my collection that i owuld like to store.....what do you guys put your high end bowies and such in.....do you use those padded zippered cases.....i want them to be safe and not get harmed of course.....also a quick question as far as displaying them.....the stands i see with certain knives.....are they allmade by the maker....or are they come across on the aftermarket.....if so does anybody make stands or something to display knives in......any info or suggestions would be appreciated.....ryan

forgot to add a few of them are carbon steel....do you put anything besides a light coat of oil on the blade or?....ryan

As far as display, my dad has one of those glass-topped chests with the drawer that slides out to access the visible display. You can line the drawer with anything non-corrosive and non-absorbant to display the knives. (He has it full of navy beans!) When we come over with the kids, he has a ratchet strap that goes around the whole thing to keep little fingers out...

I store most of my knives in Bill's Custom Cases, he uses padding that does not hold or attract moisture. When I get in a new knife, I:

1) wipe the blade down with Rubbing Alchohol. I'm amazed at the residue some makers leave on the blade.

2) coat blade and handle with Renaissance Wax. A little goes a long way and I've had no issues with rusting or pitting.

Do not store your knives in their sheaths. Hope this helps.

thanks guys...win...is there any harm to rubbing alcohol on a finish that is etched or damascus,mokume,etc.....what exactly is renaissance wax.....do u have a link....thanks for the info.....i keep seeing those bill's custom cases....i guess they are preety nice....the larger ones are like 50 dollars though....was just looking for another alternative but i guess they are pretty nice since he seems to be the only one making them.....ryan

Ryan, just Google Renaissance Wax and there are alot of places to buy it. You use very little and my can is over ten years old and still half full. (I go thru quite a few knives, too).

The Bill's Cases vary in price, the Padded Economy are fine for most of my knives. A 3x12 for a nice size knife is
$24.00. Bill's phone is 530/459-5968.

Win,

We are on the same page WRT Bill's Cases, ALL my knives are stored in them.

WRT Ren Wax, it is NOT good for storage of carbon blades. My experience with the high So-Cal humidity has been to use Marine Tuf Cloth. I was getting micro pits/spots before, now it is minimal.
