Custom Knife???

Is it possible to have someone build a custom knife to my specs...at a not too unreasonable price?

For example, I can commission someone to build me a guitar using tonewoods I select, shape, etc.

I want a Spyderco Lava knife built out of better materials. Is it possible??
 
Hopefully some makers will chime in. I don't know. Some may have reservations about duplicating a production knife almost to a 'T' and others may not care. I know Shane Sibert once did a fixed blade version of a Skirmish (looked pretty cool too). Anything is possible.
 
If you contact a custom maker they should be able to build just about anything you want within a few limitations, size, materials, and a few design aspects that can’t be done. Make sure they specialize in the type of knife you want, if one maker doesn’t want to do it he’ll probably be able to suggest someone better.

The problem is most of them have a waiting list, months to years depending on how popular they are.

Custom made to your specifications is definitely the way to go, just make sure you know what you want. I’ve been collecting knives for a few years now and I’m still learning what I do and don’t like in a design.
 
Check with Reese Weiland as i think he does this sorta thing and is very good at it from what I've seen and heard. Not sure of his site but guess a google search would uncover it.
 
I would contact STR. He has his own forum under the custom makers section. I mention him because he specializes in folders, and his prices are VERY reasonable.

Otherwise, you could post your wishes in the custom makers general section and I'm sure someone will contact you.
 
+1 for STR. He does really great work and is very reasonable on prices. I bought one of this custom folders recently and I love it. A great work knife.

Check him out and see what he offers. You won't be dissappointed.

"unreasonable" depends on your definition.

You can find someone who will build a knife to your design. You won't find anyone to flat out copy a Sypyderco design.

BTW define "Better materials". The Lava already has a VG10 blade. What do you want? egg in your beer?
