Hi! A pleasure to be here! I'm new around and this is my first thread actually. Love all the knowledge and talk that's accumulated on these threads. It's awesome! One thing that caught my attention though is that I cannot find any custom knives with engraved blades. Why do you think that is? And it is not only on this forum but on many other websites as well. It really sparks my curiosity.

P.S. I'm not a knifemaker by any means, but here are 2 photos of something my father made several years back. Hope you like it.

My guess is it suits stainless blades best as there is no heat treat scale to deal with. Blades can be engraved before heat treat with minimal clean up after. Carbon steel blades are generally re-ground after heat treat so engraving would have to be done on a hardened blade. Not something engravers would enjoy.

Nice knives your dad made.

I would shy away from engraved blades, unless it was a purely shelf sittin’ art knife.

I love engravings, but I wouldnt want to scratch up the blade engravings during use, or have to dig guck and junk outta of the engravings either.

If those knives had engraved bolsters and no blade engraving, I’d probably buy one. They are nice lookin.

David Boye did a lot of blade etching and of course there was a lot of that done by factory concerns in USA, England, and Germany for over 100 years now. But actual blades are fairly unusual. Presentation swords' with engraved blades are more common.

It can be a lot more work with the cleanup after heat treat, plus there's always the chance of the blade not making it through heat treat...all that work for nothing🤦‍♂️

David did not do any of the decorative work other than handles, Francine Karsten (Francine Etchings) and her team of Artists used acid to etch the blade, there was no engraving as such.

I would think the expense of doing. If you can do it your self. That saves, but paying someone. Hard to recoup that money on the sale unless your very well known
