Hi

My question is simple. Is here any craftsmen, who would be able to make leather sheath purely on given dimensions of knife and it's pictures, without necessity of posting knife itself to him/her???

I have a two large knives, for which I am seeking not very complicated, but well sawn, quality leather sheaths, each with loop for firesteel and small pocket for sharpening stone...

Thanks for every answer

(I hope I can ask this as basic registered user of Bf,if not please feel free to delete my thread or lock it mods)

Yes, it can be done….but it is absolutely necessary that you not care if the knife/knives, fire steel and sharpening stones fit in their respective area of the sheath. If, on the other hand you are going to be picky and want things to fit really nice, then it's nice if the maker has the advantage of having the knives, steel and stones.

Priority mail works wonderfully and is not really all that expensive and is really pretty fast.

There are certain styles of sheaths (sash carry) which can be made successfully from just a really accurate tracing of the complete knife, but anything that needs to be fitted such as a retention strap needs the knife or an accurate wood dummy for fitting. Accurate wood dummies and cylindrical dummies can also be made for the other items for fitting.

A lot depends on what you consider a good fit. A perfect fit is what I consider a good fit.

Best regards,

Paul

Thank you very much for your reply Sir.Well, firesteel is 6inch long and half inch diameter (on this I will mount some sort of small cap or handle in order to hold it in loop) and stone pocket should fit small Arkansas stone that is widely available on amazon, eBay etc...

No I wouldn't expect perfect fit,but both knives are significantly large, one custom Bowie is near to 18 inch long and another is just a standard replica of movie knife Predator machete (20inch long knife) from Mastercutlery that comes with wooden plaque, but without sheath....

Only sheath I make where I don't require the knife is my boot/IWB sheath. I need the knife on all others.

I tried once to make a sheath on measurements only. I'll never do that again. Epic fail :p

Even an outline only gives you the bare basic dimensions and something I wont take a chance on.

There are too many variables such as handle size, guard size, and blade geometry in general that make it incredibly difficult to to make even a decent fit.

Sounds like a great DIY project!

I would gladly try,but have no tools for this sort of work whatsoever :) I would have to do deeper research online on how to make the sheath, there are few interesting videos on youtube, watched few great guys with a lot of skills making it from a-z but I realised with each such video, there are always certain tools that I just don't have

I fully understand and thanks for reply!

Check through some of the how to threads on this site. Also there are some threads for basic tool replacements. For a functional sheath you could get by with a razor knife, contact cement, awl, and needle and thread. Wouldn't be pretty, but would work. 3 years ago i wanted a sheath for a knife i had just made but had no idea how to make one. After a couple days rooting around here, i attempted my first one (pretty ugly, but worked). Today I can make a pretty nice sheath on a saturday afternoon and don't think twice about more exotic projects. These guys are great!. I recommend just giving it a try. Any by the way, thanks to all of you who contribute and have helped me in my new passion. rtmind/Randy

Well done!!! If you can, post few pictures (especially your first one) please

I did a sheath for a friend by mail.
I had him trace the knife lying down and standing on it's edge.
I made a rudimentary form out of foam core and matte board.

Then built the sheath around the form

He is a handy guy so I sent him the sheath and he wet formed it himself.

Was it as good as having the knife?
No way.
Was he happy with the sheath?
Yes.

Compromises happen.

For the OPs knives mentioned above... DIY... it'll be fun.
