Hiya!

I go by the tag papercut on Multitool.org where I have been discussing this topic, but I figure the good folks over here might want to be informed as well. As all SAK modders know the 84, 91, and 93mm Vics and 85mm Wengers use brass pins which are on the metric standard- 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0mm. Various models use the three different pin sizes. Unfortunately, pinning is an acquired skill that is not easily mastered. For folks who want to do some simple mods this becomes an issue.

Screws and pivots can be an answer, Spyh's great mods are testament to this, but the common pivots barrels on the market are imperial standard not metric, so precision drilling is required if one currently wants to use screws. Metric pivots have been elusive for several years and do not seem to be on the market at all in the sizes for SAKS.

But, metric pivot barrels can be custom ordered. I am in discussion with several suppliers with the following spec:

1. 3.0mm pivots with M2 thread all the way through, Stainless Steel 304
2. 2.5mm pivots with M1.6 thread all the way through, Stainless Steel 304
3. 2.2mm pivots with M1.4 thread all the way through, Stainless Steel 304

The length of the pivot barrels I am shooting for is 26mm, so it is possible each barrell can be used twice (after careful cutting at home). The downwside to custom orders is that there is a minimum order size, in this case 100 (so 3*100) with each unit costing about $0.70 USD. This is actually pretty cheap, but will require about a $200 upfront cost.

I am probably willing to front the money, but only interested in acquiring about a third of the barrels (~33 of each size) at the moment. Is anyone else interested in this project?

SAKs have 3-4 pins per model, so this could set you up for a while.

Cheers

I've been thinking about getting into SAK modding in the near future, so I'd be interested in a few of each (maybe 9 or 12?) if you get enough takers to make up the rest.

Cool, i'll keep ya posted. I think I will get the 2.5mm barrel pivots even if the no one wants the other sizes. Wenger uses 2.5 x 4 in their 85mm line so it will be groovy. Vic 84 is 2.2 x 3 (alox) or x 4 with backtools. Vic 91 used 2.5 and 2.2 in some combination, while 93 alox uses 3.0 and 2.5 IIRC.

Cheers

Ok cool, I think there is enough demand on here and MTO to go ahead with the order. An MTO user would like 1/2, I am interested in 1/3, and now 2 nice folks are in for 1/10. That means:

15/30 + 10/30 + 3/30 + 3/30 = 31/30!

Uh oh, no worries though, my portion could be cut a few thirtieths without any issue. If anyone else wants in let me know in the next day or so, I can make the order larger or shrink my portion a bit.

Once this gets off the ground the next project is prefabbed Carbon Fiber scales with holes precut. Think an alox type scale (no outerliners) for 85mm Wenger and 91mm Vic. They will go perfectly with the metric pivot barrels :p

Ok, after further discussion with the supplier, he feels the smaller barrels are not possible with 304 steel, and he recommends brass (at the same price). Is this a good idea? I know SAKs use brass pins, but they are not hollow.

What do you think?

He confirms the 3.0 M2 barrels can be in 304 steel, but the 2.5 M1.6 and 2.2 M1.4 need to be in brass. Is brass strong enough? And are you guys still interested if this is the case?

Its going to be a go, I got the green light from enough folks with the brass steel order. I should have them in my hot little hand by the end of the third week of the month.

Cheers

Ok, the order has been placed and payment has been made. If everything is kosher I will post the suppliers info for future reference and if the deal goes sour ill post their info for future scorn. But it seems that the supplier is quite capable, we shall see though.

Ok, the grades of material has been confirmed:

Steel for the 3.0mm barrels is 304
Brass for the 2.5mm and 2.2mm barrels is c360

I know initially it was all steel, but it seems that the smaller barrels are too small for such type of machining in steel. Let me know if this is a problem.

Cheers

Wonderful idea!
If you ship to Germany I will take 50 pieces of each item.

Best regards

Hmmm, I think it is too late to expand this order, that being said, I may be able to squeeze a half dozen or so of each for you. I am already doing a group ship to Germany for several MTO users, so maybe your portion can be added.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is another order in a bit (if all is in order with this order that is).

Cheers

Dear Teazia,

thank you for your quick answer.
If there will be an additional production run I would be happy if you can count me in.
You already have my e-mail-adress.

Best regards

Hmmm, the supplier has informed me that 26mm is rather difficult to tap in one go. He asked if he could go in two directions. I asked him to tell me the longest single tap he could make, as double taps are not ideal due to variance in the length of the used length of each barrel. I also told him the length is a bit flexible, so we shall see.

So far I have 10 people interested in the barrels, I might need to jigger the unit up a bit so that everyone can get sufficient quantity (maybe 9 or 10 instead of a dozen or somesuch).

The supplier said the new design is no problem to produce and infact production is ongoing at the moment.

Cheers

For those with an order please send me your paypal address and physical address. It seems like the goods will arrive here mid next week, which is getting tight on my Feb 2 flight, so everything will be a bit compressed if I am to send things to the EU before I head off to the USA for CNY.

Once I have the goods I can weight everything and have a good idea about how much shipping will be so I can issue an invoice. I asked the suppliers for some pictures so hopefully I can post them soon.

Cheers

Hey Teazia, your account is set up to not receive forum PMs, and you don't have an email address listed. I sent you a PM over at multitool.org, but you might want to turn PMs on here!
