It seems like I have been to every website around looking for a "Gentlemen's knife". I have seen the CR Umfaan and sebenza, but I was wondering if any of the custom makers out there would make such a knife. Not a tactical, but one with 440v steel of approx. 2 7/8" length, liner lock (the thick one), ivory slabs, pocket clip, razor sharp. Any ideas?

Tbark:

Really some nice pieces. The AMEX piece is especially appealing. I'm not a fan of ATS-34, do you do anything in 440v?

I have made a couple of blades out of 440-v my main steel is 440-c/ATS-34 and L-6 I have used D-2 1095 o-1 and all that the only thing I have against the 440-v it is generaly too hard to sharpen for the clientell I have had so far but hey different strokes you know you might look on my other site at http://vip.hpnc.com/~tbark there is several different knives over there I have never been one to stay with one certian pattern Too Boring Thank You for the compliment's

Have you looked at the stuff Johnny Stout has to offer? He makes fantastic looking "gentleman's knives" w/ fluted ivory handles, etc. Expensive but very, very nice.

Well, you also might want to try crusing through knifeart.com and arizona custom knives. Both have really great selections of "gentlemen's knives" over a wide price range and styles.

The again, for a "fancy folder" you might want something like this:

I've got folders made from 440V and BG-42 and I prefer BG-42. When you lower the hardness of 440V enough to keep it from being brittle, it takes a great edge and is very abrasion resistant, but it indents easier than BG-42. The trick is that BG-42 works well around 60 RC while 440V is often kept closer to 56 RC to prevent chipping.

I think you'll get a wider selection and more bang-for-you-buck if you look for BG-42. If you like a really mirror polished type of blade you might even want ATS-34.

Fracmeister,

Awesome looking knife! Could you share some details, like who is the maker? Is it part of your collection?

Thanks

I recommend you talk to Gene Osborn.
As a true custom maker,he makes liner locks and lock backs, whatever the customer wants, but I especially think you should handle one of his scale release knives before you decide.
