Forgive the 'gushy' title, but custom makers continue to impress me with their willingness to share insights, techniques, and general shop advice. At the NCCA show today, I spent a while talking with John Kubasek. All sorts of neat shop tips and techniques that are sure to save me time (and money

). It just amazes me how willing makers are to share this information, even though it often helps to create more competition for them. I'm guessing here, but I think it must be the general allure of teching: to watch as someone gains accolades and know that you in some way helped them achieve that.

Kudos to all of you! (unless you are a maker who doesn't fit the above description; in which case, I have yet to meet you, because all the makers I've met and talked to certainly fit it!)

JB,
You have touched on one of the things that adds the most to this industry or hobby as far as I am concerned and that is the quality of people involved.

Some of the things that we experience and see at shows can not be duplicated as clearly when we are behind our keyboards and monitors.

" I am continually reminded of the rewards of dealing with custom knife makers and the custom knife community." Jeff J.

JB: Good subject. The reason I collect handmade knives is because it allows you to share what went into the making of the knife with the knifemaker. Some factory knives are extremely well made[ Chris Reeve for example] and may cut as well or better than some custom knives, but they have no "soul". Plus part of the fun of collecting handmades is meeting and/or talking to the maker.

I have found that almost without exception, custom knifemakers are honest, friendly and fun to talk to, not to mention a fountain of knowledge about knives, which they are more than willing to share.

It is also a pleasure to deal with the purveyors of custom knives, people like Les Robertson, Jay and Karen Sadow and Larry Connelley, who share the same qualities as the knifemakers they represent.

Besides, when was the last time you had a good coversation with a CNC machine?

Let's hear from other custom collectors out there.
