Custom Makers who make lockback folders?

To me "Tactical" folders have lost their appeal. I have carried many good ones both factory and a few customs and they work fine, I just haven't "bonded" with any of them. They seem cold and without any personality of their own. Lately I have been carrying my old lockbacks that I had bought 5-18 years ago and found that for me,they do the job and feel familiar and right (I don't know how to explain it) Anyhow, I would like to buy a custom folder with a standard old fashioned lockback lock, a 2 3/4-3" blade with either Damascus or D2 steel and jigged bone or other natural handle material. I have been looking for something like this and have not been able to find a maker who still does this kind of work. The max. I could spend would be $400 tops. Can any of you recommend any quality maker(s) I can look to?
Thank You...Ed.

Ed,
Mike "Whiskers" Allen makes some of the cleanest, smoothest, and usable lockbacks. His work is outstanding and his prices are very reasonable. Mike is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

Here is a poor scan of my "Whiskers" lockback with stainless liners & bolsters and oosic scales.

I'm planning on buying a Boguzewski lockback that I saw at a show, today, but it was marked $475. A slightly less fancy model might be less, but custom lockbacks are somewhat new to me, so I'll bet some of the other members have a better idea of what is available in your price range.

I’d suggest that you take a look at the work of Paul Reynolds. Paul does first-rate work and has several nice lockback patterns; I’m sure he could develop a design in any materials you might care for. A few months ago I was fortunate enough to win one of Paul’s “gent’s folders” in Talonite in a BFC contest (courtesy of Tom Walz at Carbide Processors)…the craftsmanship on the blade is incredible. Paul is a pleasure to work with and his prices are quite reasonable. I’ll probably be placing an order for one of Paul’s lockbacks as soon as I can pay off some of my other customs

The nicest lockback folder I have ever handled, is the one I own that was made by J.P. Moss. You can see what it looks like on his web page. It has a beautiful stag handle...brass liners...and an ATS34 blade (sub zero quenched). This knife opens as smooth as butter and closes just as smoothly. Ther is no thumb stud to distract from its beauty..only a nail nick on the blade. J.P. does such a nice job on these..that you won't believe the action on her. Having been to many knife shows in my time...and having purchased many knives from various makers...I can say without reservation...that J.P. Moss flat grinds the nicest blade you will ever find. He genuinely builds his knives to the micrometer in tolerances...and I have never seen a flatter grind than his. You WILL NOT find a dip or a wave anywhere on his steel. You need to see it to believe it.

I like his work so much in fact, that I own.. 6 of his knives and have a 7th on order. The bowies that I have from him...blow the doors off any others I have seen.

Dear Ed,

Just couldn't resist suggesting that before you make that "final decision" on a "custom" lockback damascus, you check our production lockback damascus knives - all with either Mike Norris or Devin Thomas damascus, and various natural handle materials. Super value - great quality. (link below to our site)
