I just found this site w/ some help.

I was looking for custom makers who make good knives and won't break the bank. Mainly looking for general purpose pocket knives and hunting/fishing outdoor knives.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Lots of great makers on the forums. Definitely check out David Winston's knives for some very affordable and "clean" blades.

Welcome cowboy! The list of makers who can and will turn out a quality knife at an affordable price is long and distinguished and includes many regular participants on the forums. I'd recommend using the search function to sift through the vast quantities of very useful info you will find here. Also, being as specific as you can as to the type of knife you are looking for (forged, stock removal, handle material, embellishments?) as well as a general price range (our banks all break at different points) and some indication of your needs in terms of delivery (can you wait a month? a year?) would likely result in more useful recommendations.

Happy knife hunting.

Cheers,

Roger

I have a couple items I'm looking for specifically.I'm not well versed in knife making materials, but I'll see if I can do better.

I am looking for a pocket knife either folding or not that has a 2-3" blade. I'd like it to be more functional than pretty, but still good lookin'. I'd like it to keep it's edge and be able to get real sharp. I'm looking in the price range of $100-200. I'll likely get a matching pair; one for my father and one for me.

There really are a LOT of makers who could fill be the bill on the fixed blade front, but two that come to mind for really offering exceptional value in the category of a small, good-looking but hard working hunter / utility are Burt Foster and Ed Caffrey.

Here's a look at some of Burt's "Blue Collar" hunters - all hand forged with gorgeous wood handles and leather sheaths for $150. This from an ABS Master Smith. Tough to beat:

Ed is also an ABS Master Smith and his EBK is a terrific little knife and a super value at $155:

I have owned knives by both these guys and their workmanship is first rate and they are real good people to deal with as well.

Your options will be many.

My advice is to hang out here (and other knife forums) for awhile. Read posts, look at pictures, get to know some makers.
