Well, I was wondering if anyone knows of a knife-maker who
makes multi-tools or anything close to being handmade?
I think it would be pretty cool if there was someone.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm guessing it would be cost prohibitive . Multiblade slipjoints are expensive , can't even imagine the cost of a custom plierbased multi or SAK type lifeform .

Multi's are one instance where the makers really need the economies of scale .

If ya find one , please post pics . Modding or pimping might be a more realistic option .

Yea, I figured the cost was the key issue. I was just curious as to what they
would look like. Oh well. I guess I will continue to dream.....

This is something I think through a lot. I think cost is the main issue, as stated before.

I had a deal in the works recently for a Leatherman Wave, and the owner had a custom S30V blade made, that he said cost as much as the tool. The cost of that kind of shocked me.

A.G. Russell made a 'Premium Scout Knife' with a better (154CM?) blade steel, but the tools remained something like 420, as it was better for the purposes the tools served. It occurred to me that that might be an issue as well, having to use different steels - and different manufacturing techniques and more production time - for various implements, again driving costs up.

I'd love to see a beefy, G10 handled TL29 in D2, or a Remington replica Scout in the same material. Maybe see if one of the new manufacturers (Canal Street!) would be willing to make a cool BFC annual knife for us, to our specs.

There are several tutorials online on taking down SAK's, and rebuilding them with different tools. I always wanted an ALOX model (Soldier?) with scissors, but I read somewhere that ALOX types usually don't have scissors, and the scissors from the celidor types won't interchange due to the spring configuration. Other than that I've seen some pretty nifty SAK mods.

That's what makes being knife knuts so much fun: fantasizing. ;)

Not really a multitool, but as close as it gets:

Kaj Is the swedish custom maker that made way for others here in Sweden. Before him noone dared to put so much work in a knife making it to expensive. Nowadays there are several realy good custom makers but Kaj still remain the master.

Beautiful piece of work! What is the short hooked blade for? Opening sixpacks or does it have some other mysterious purpose? :D

the guy had a blade made?

I've seen where someone purchased a wave, and another leatherman (I believe a skeletool) and took the knife blade from the latter and modded it into the wave

For mods, check out multitool.org Some members have really tricked out their MTs

I've made a few custom knives and have considered making a custom multi-tool. The biggest problem is cost vs time.

I can make one in a "relatively" short time, but then the parts would all have to be waterjet cut outside. All the heat treat outside. Each individual tool would count as an individual blade. So the cost to cut and heat treat would run upwards of 7-10 times the cost to make a single bladed folder.

On the other side I could profile the tools by hand. Which would be incredibly tedious and time consuming. If I really wanted to push it I might be able to heat treat it myself. But then risk warpage and scrapped parts. So I would still send out for heat treat.

So in a nutshell it can be done. But it just isnt cost effective unless someone is willing to pay insane money for it. The sales price would need to be exhorbitant.

I think the majors have the 'tool' part down. I really really like my Wave. But I never use the serrated blade and don't love the grind on the main blade.

I'll take a FFG blade with a big opening hole and a shorter scandi blade for carving - VG 10 or 440C would be just fine.
