Looking for a skeletonized fixed blade neck knife, made of s30v stainless. I normally carry a spyderco salt in my pocket, but hate using a lanyard on the knife. It tends to fall out of my swim trunks when crawling on the deck wrestling with sails. Maybe a neck knife is the ticket! I have never worn one, so excuse me for being a newbie.

Things it needs:

Tapered slots in the grip for use on shackles
Non-serrated blade (for cutting vectran lines)
About 3.5" blade to make it big enough to be of use, but still comfortable to wear
Synthetic sheath with some mechanism to keep it in there securely
Need to be able to draw it one-handed
As light as practical
Some kind of prying tip on the handle end would be a bonus
Maybe a bright fluorescent color?

Should this be worn with the tip up or tip down?

Quotes from custom makers welcome!

Attached is an example of what the handle might look like.

The blade I think should be shorter.

Can't really think of any S30V blades fitting the bill at that blade length, but a Bark River Bravo Necker would be just short of it in CPM-3V (not stainless, but doesn't stain easily in my experience at all) which I've found performs excellently.

Chris reeve professional soldier is exactly what you're describing. Have been edc'ing mine for three an a half years now. Love it. Sheath is good for either tip down or up on the neck.

Thanks for the find! The PS looks like a really nice blade. Seems like a lot of money at $205, but cheaper than a custom build. One question- if it is carried tip up is it just friction to keep it from dropping out?

The Bark River knife looks like a great value at $69. I might just get one coming for a backup.

It's a molded kydex sheath which has excellent retention when carried tip up. Mine has never fallen out with daily use.

3V is an amazing steel and at that price you're darn right. Holds a great edge and it's a few times the toughness of S30V, just not as stainless.

3V would rust horribly in a marine environment.

The Boye Boat knife sounds like the ticket-$324.00, dendritic cobalt and will totally stand up to the challenge.

The Boye does sound like some great steel. At 6 oz and 8" long maybe more that I want hanging from my neck. PS still looking like the best of the lot.

We also keep a few of those little Vicortonix razor sharp paring knives taped to various things on deck. Great for emergency line cutting. I have one right next to the inflatable liferaft cannister!
